308 vs 223 rear retainer
What do I have to do in order to modify a 308 rear hg retainer to fit a 223 frame?

The retainers hug the receiver and also fit around the barrel. You would need to correct the barrel portion thats missing. This can be done by cutting and adding in the metal.

recs. are same width-barrel hole needs to be enlarged to fit over the barrel shoulder.
I have a cnc program to do mine with otherwise you need one BIG ass endmill/drill bit!

Bad idea IMO.
308 retainers are oversized and won't fit around the chamber portion of the barrel. You would need to sleeve the barrel or the retainer, both a PITA. Better to just buy a .223 retainer instead of butchering up a 308.

I think there are M78 hg retainers in a box of parts here. What is the barrels o.d. around the chamber?

This fix is about as complicated as making breakfast.

Bunny do you have a decent welder?

Better yet can you weld?

If you have a old unusable barrel then use it as a guide.

I have a machine shop a block away that can weld for a good price. I'm in an apartment so TIG/MIG welding is sort of out of the question.

308 retainer has the bipod handle attachment and 223 I've spent a year trying to find so I've resorted to this instead.

Here are some pictures incase anyone looks for this answer in the future. My question is, why does the handguard need to be supported by the entire barrel chamber portion of the barrel? The side notches on the 308 retainer fit the 5.56 receiver perfectly, and the bottom portion of the chamber supports the bottom part of the retainer.
