This is probably a stupid question. But I've never built an AK before, and I'm lookin at doing a build. So here goes.

What parts will or wont interchange between a stamped and milled version? Are they like the FALs, where most parts will interchange with a couple exceptions? Or are the parts for the stamped so different they wont fit on a milled receiver? I found a kit that I like, but the only do-it-yourself receiver I've found that doesnt require a ton of work is a milled (just gotta weld the rails in). I want one of those, because theres no paperwork and quite frankly, its none of the .gov's goddamn business what I choose to buy with my money. However, the kit that I want is Romanian, and made for stamped receiver.

So is it workable? Or should I just get one of those receiver blanks, drill the holes myself, install the rails, and see if I can get someone to heat threat it?

I think the only thing that wont interchange is the rear stock you will need to get a new rear stock (pretty easy to find) You can heat treat the receiver yourself with a mapp torch, but most of your lower rails are heat treated already, and the average shooter wont wear out the pin holes they will run out of ammo money first. Where did you find a milled receiver that just needs the lower rails welded on? The only one I am aware of also has to have the top rails fabricated and welded on. You may want to contact Global about the new receiver they have it is a stamped but the thickest available they have it in a few forms of completion, the $49.99 version has no holes drilled so it may not be a FFL item.

I've only worked with Bulgarian milled receivers, but they are made for double-hook triggers. A single-hook will work, I think, but needs only 1 slot (the left one) in the trigger cut-out instead of 2. Also, the walls are thicker, so you'll have to trim down the wood on the forearm where it goes into the receiver.

Generally, most parts are interchangable, with some exceptions. Some milled rec. barrels are screw in rather than press in. Milled receiver stocks are attached with 2 tangs, rather than 1 for stamped.
Buy a tapco flat for 29.95. It can be bent easily and cheaply, with the right tools. Stay away from the Romanian kits, they are shot out POS. Get a Global Polish PMKMS, or a centerfire AMD65.
