View Full Version : Removing baked on enamel
I am having problems removing the finish on an AMD65. It appears to be baked on enamel; paint remover doesn’t seem to do a thing any suggestions?

I'd say bead blast it off also. You could wet sand it and feather it, then repaint it (is what I am doing now). But if my company didn't mind, I'd take her in and bead blast it. Is some tough stuff (why I'll go back with paint). Cheap, I am. But, we are talking cheap, a language I understand too well.

Have you tried PolyStrippa? The stuff destroyed any painted finish I tried not to get it on! Brake fluid also?

I am glad you raised this issue. I have a few AMD-65 kits. They appear to me to be Manganese Parkerizing. I plan to repark a shiney spot on the flash hider and that should confirm whether I am wrong or not.
Has anyone confirmed what the finish is?

All the ones I have seen have been some sort of black paint, probably enamel.
I havent seen one yet that was Parked, but that doesnt mean they dont exist.
Sometimes we use a product called "Aircraft Stripper" to remove stubborn thick paint before the beadblast.

Don't glass bead it ! Sandblast it with 90 grit at about 40 psi. glass bead will only polish the metel you need a rougher surface like the sandblasting will give it. trust me I've done this before..... :skull:
Use the "aircraft" stripper. I just refinished a Chinese Draganov that had baked on enamel, and the aircraft stripper was the only thing that would work. Get it at an auto paint supply.
Had to soak it for about 30 hours in aircraft stripper, then still had to take a wire wheel to it, tough stuff.
