I had to drive AAAAAAaaaaaaalllll the way down to Fort Gordon to get it ... about 200 miles each way.
And I had to weave my way, draggin it through going home rush hour traffic in Atlanta coming back. Bumper to bumper from just before Atlanta all the way to freakin' Canton.
The whole trip took about 10 hours, counting the paper work and hook up.
ITS FREAKIN' PERFECT.
I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow.

NUMBER 1 G.I.!!!
This is what happens when the government gets the HELL outta the way ... and turns the whole thing over to a private business!!!
The LAND CRABS were even nice!!! I had a chance to speak with a couple of folks while I was waiting for the process to get done ...
To a man ... they were polite and helpful ... they had the information I was looking for ... and they didn't send me on any wild freakin' goose chases!!!
The ONLY hang up ... is the government stuff. Getting the End User Certificate took TWO MONTHS!!! I understnad ... once you have the first one its a LOT quicker.
But the first time out ... you are gonna wait!
anyoldway:
The sights are easy to figure out.
The registration and bidding are VERY similar to Ebay
SOME items you can even arrange to "preview" ... but 96% you are buying from pictures.
The good part ... there are always multiple CLEAR pictures of what you are bidding for ... and if you win ... when you go to buy it ... if it don't LOOK LIKE THE PICTURE ... like something is missing or broken that wasn't that way in the foto ... you get a refund.
It's almost like dealing with the CMP ... you bid, you wait ... you get a box ... AND ITS LIKE FREAKIN' CHRISTMAS!!!!
... in olive drab, of course!

with TWO new tires (!!!):
$176.55
Now that I got it home and did my formal measurements.
Other then the 9 foot length of bed and 85" +/- total width; the wheel arches line up just about perfect to fit the Ford F series pickup.
This is as close to a bolt on as you can possibly get.
Negatives ... there are a couple of rusty spots ... but nothing that can't gets scraped, primed and painted GREEN!!!
The wire harness is completely shot. The insulation has dried out and is falling off the wire. I wasn't going to use it anyway ... but it IS something to keep in mind if you want one.
Like I said it has new tires ... I haven't pulled the wheels to check the brakes and bearings ... but that don't really matter much to me.
Down the road I might pull the military axle, brakes wheels and tires off ... and bolt a junkyard Ford Pickup differential (with brakes and tires) to the frame ... and mount my old pickup bed on it. This would give me a utility trailer at HUMAN height to haul fire wood and shit. Maybe I could sell these Mil tires for a couple bucks.

BTW ... the "clip on" tail lights on the trailer?
They are the old tail light units AND harness from my old Ford. I just had to add a little length to the harness ... and bungee them on.
The duct tape is there ... just because.
I took the tarp off after I found the amount of drag it was creating on the ride home. When I took the tarp off ... and dropped the tailgate ... it was like adding 100 horsepower to the old gal!

Nice Ted! You can buy an axle cheap enough from Northern Equip or the like
with the hub size you need to match your truck. You may even be able to just
swap out the hubs, mount that axle over the leafs and be done. With smaller
wheels and tires it'll drop it a bunch.

A trailer?

A U-boat?
By the looks at what was down at Fort Gordon it could have been ANY of those things.
When I got to the lot where this stuff was stored ...
I almost passed out ... the pleasure was far too much for my feeble brain to take all at once.
Trucks, trailers of all shapes and sizes, rows of gen sets, lathes, mills, drill presses, saws, equipment of almost every size and description ...
A cornucopia of wasteful government spending and excess.
It was like being back at Philly Navy Yard ...
except they wouldn't let me touch NOTHING!!!
You cannot "PREVIEW" anything that is up for auction ... unless the item specifies that you can.
But they can't stop you from drooling!

As I was pulling into the lot ... I saw a couple of guys leaving with their DEUCE AND A HALF.
All smiles and PROUD.
The best part?
They were pulling the damn thing behind some kinda late model pickup truck.
They were flat towing it with some kinda heavy duty tow strap!!!
I've done a LOT of crazy things in my life ...
I'm going to be watching the Darwin Award site to see how it all worked out for them.

This has been done before.
I found this a couple of days ago.
That one is a smaller trailer ... probably an M 101 or 103?
Mine is a foot longer ... and will be a bit wider then the cab.
Try to picture tool boxes in the spaces below the bed, ahead and behind the rear tire. To fill in that dark ugly void where you can see the chassis.

I LOVE that idea ... but to my eye, the proportions are kinda off. The back of the hood is a bit too narrow to suit the width of the cab.
Also ... I would like to set the headlamps IN the "grill" and set the blackout lights and directional, park lamps on the fender tops.
Maybe something like this:

Why has nobody made a movie around one of these things ... fightin' to keep Route One in Vietnam open and cleared of communist scum? Exhaust stacks belching smoke and fury ... guns spitting fire and lead. GUN TRUCKS racin' against time and distance to protect vital convoys of material and men and keep them movin' to VICTORY.

The old Fords had the gas tank inside the cab, behind the seat. I guess you'll need a stake body type filler tube and maybe a matching tank. With all of the flatbeds around it shouldn't be difficult. Maybe even a tank from a different type of truck could be fitted.

Maybe you can use the stock fuel tank and maybe have to make a support for the filler tube, or maybe that's not even required. Here's some places that deal with fuel tanks.

Great cockpit pics Bigwheel! My Dad had an opportunity to buy a surplus D model right after WWII, IIRC the going rate back then was $600! After figuring up the operating costs per hour he passed and went with the Waco trainer for the same price.:cry_small
Gun trucks are cool, Dad rode around in a halftrack for most of the war. After the first couple of strafing runs from the Germans they salvaged a 20mm automatic cannon from a German fighter and rigged it up into a ring mount up behind the cab, that was his fighting position whenever the Luftwaffe came a callin'. Well, either there or under a handy Sherman tank depending on warning!
