View Thread: Alternative to CCI #34 primers?
johnnywayner3@yahoo.com
Im reloading my m1 Garand and other large bore military semi autos. Is there an alternative to CCI #34 primers for mil-spec sensitivity??

Remington 9 1/2 fo non-magnum and Remington 9 1/2M for magnum primers if needed. These were the safety standards for service rifle loads before there were #34 mil spec primers available. Now that's been a few years ago and things may have changed with them. Years ago Winchester primers were too sensitive, like Federal primers. Winchester changed to less sensitive "safer" primers about 4 years before #34's came out but the newer non-plated copper colored Winchester primers are more sensitive again. Winchester claims they received complaints of misfires due to light primer strikes and off-center primer strikes. So the newer Winchester primers have changed to more sensitive again. If you find nickel plated Winchester primers they should be the older safer ones. I doubt there are any around anymore though.

Thanks for the info!

What kind of loads are you loading for your Garand?

I had a X39 Barrel for Handi rifle... Loose chamber, it would fire 98% of the time with Anything but Normal LR CCI or #34 Primers, these failed 90% of the time. Win and Rem both did fine, much softer....
Not real Scientific... but tidbits I have learned..

I've seen the same complaint of a loose chamber in the 7.62x39 CZ-527. What brand of dies are you using?

Actually, we have the SAME issues with a 527 lol, with fireformed brass and Non CCI primers, it works fine also.
Lee Dies, but we set them Way out so we were just neck sizing, no dif. The CCI primers are much harder in my experience.
