View Thread: Midland Portable Radio Opinions Please

We are looking at a catolog that shows Midland Portable Radios. The units claim 30 to 36 mile sending and receiving ability. I am assuming that is flat terrain with no trees. We on the other hand are in a mountain forest environment. I would appreciate any actual usage experiences as we are ready to purchase some form of portable radio equipment.
Thank You

Unless they are extremely high wattage output (20+), expect 5 miles in normal terrain with some trees and hills, maybe 10 or so on a flat plain. Hilltop to hilltop maybe greater. That's with any GMRS type radio, not just the Midland. The boss has a pair of the mid range Midland radios, his get about that during deer hunting. One went bad on him though, squelch seemed to quit working and no transmit. Midland customer service sent him a new set, so at least they stand behind them.
