View Thread: Red Dots/Kobra's
ChrisAK
I am looking to buy a red dot for my AK, preferably something Russian. I already have an Eotech and am interested in perhaps a Kobra or something similar. It appears as if Kalinka is out of Kobra's entirely. Anywhere else to get these?? I like the idea of the all-in-one aspect to these as opposed to having to get both the red dot and the rail mount adapter.
Any word on these? Pro's/Con's??
Thanks,
Chris

I like my Kobra. It is one that takes the AA batteries that some people have had problems with but after several thousand rounds mine hasn't flinched. There are other options that have the sight and rail combined in 1 unit. PK-A and PK-23 come to mind.

The Kobra is an overpriced POS. I know well I have one. The on/off switch lever is pot metal and WILL break over time. They are near impossible to get parts and service for. I ended up making the part myself with several hours work involved. Save your money and buy some Russian mounts and a better quality unit or something less expensive.

Def not talking trash here, but are you sure you didn't get a fake/counterfeit? There are lots floating around. Agree about parts, but that pretty much goes for all Commie optics.

I bought one of the first units imported, long before there were fakes. I am a electronics tech by trade and know trash when I see it. Screw these POSs. Where will you get parts and service when the overpriced POS quits? The Russian manufacture obviously could not give a rat.

That's too bad you had bad luck with yours. To be honest half the reason I like the Kobra's is just to have a somewhat correct optic on my AKs. I'd say the quality is on par with any other commie optic I own or have owned.

Have you considered a PK-01V?

I have kobras and PK's on all my rifles except tacticool AR. Sig, Rob Arms AK of course. I find them to be reliable rugged an accurate. Had mine for maybe 2 years now, nothing broke yet. You can find both kobra and PK on the ebay. It seems that kobra prices shot up lately and are hovering around 400, At that rate you might as well get an aimpoint on a side to weaver conversion mount. When I was getting them they were around 300. PK-23 is still 200 bucks and it's a good choice IMHO. If you buy from opticsbell seller you might have to wait few weeks they ship them straight from the factory in belorussia.

They were 200.00 not more than 2 years ago and not a good deal at that price.
I looked hard at them and had a couple offered to me at a good price by a friend.
Glad I passed. Aimpoints are the way to go on red dots.

Had mine for four years and not a single issue. Actually it survived a house fire recently. Barried in ash and rubble plus the water/foam the fire department used and arizona sun in mid summer for two months till I found it. Pick it up,used a paint brush to get the chunks of ash off it,turned it on and no issue's. Still zeroed in when I mounted it to the vepr.
Dont think its worth the 300 dollar going rate, but it beats the 500 and up american dots.
Had an aimpoint once, bought it new from local gs,took it out and mounted.Went to turn it on and the thing was broke, new in box. Got my money back bought a weaver kobra and never looked back.
A few friends picked up kobras on my recommendation and love them.
I dont think of anything else when im looking for a dot.

Tell me about your kobra warranty.

Tell me about your aimpoint price tag :). I'm not knocking aimpoints I have them and they are solid optics. But Kobra's are on the par as well. I want a dot to hold zero and have decent battery and electronic components life. So far I haven't had a single issue with my russian dots and I do abuse them.
bigwheel
I've never paid over 325.00 for an aimpoint with full warranty. Still see them on
special for that price and less.
matrosov
Now you got my attention :). All I'm seeing is 600 price tag for micro's and comp m4s. Comp M4 would be inline with PK23. If I can get a micro or m4 vs kobra for 300 I'd definetely say get an aimpoint. Although the purist in me still says that kobra on AK is a much better option. But I'd get them for all my NATO rifles. No sarcasm here by the way.

My first Kobra,i took out of the box, put the batteries in and broke the switch off trying to turn it on.

which brings me back to square one....
What f@n'g rail or mount do you use.
a. I am not sure I want a Ultimak. (Hot location for a optic, (Eotech 512 is what i have now.)) Maybe ultimak and Aimpoint? Hmmm...Feels wrong to have a optic that out prices the gun mounted on a AK.....
b. So unless you have a side optic mount to mount the "bracket" on, you drill. And add weight....
c. Use a dust cover mount....(pretty sure those are all trash)
My thoughts: for such a well laid out gun, it doesn't do donkey for my line of optic thinking.
Help.....

I have an ultimak and haven't had any heat related problems, but I live in a cool
climate.
I don't think you will find the micro's discounted much. At least I haven't seen
them.

Might feel wrong, you'll get over it. The Aimpoint H-1/Ultimak combo is the best way to go, period. 2nd best is the Comp Ml2/Ultimak.
You also forgot option "D": One of the Beryl "Dog Leg" rails available either from Krebs or other, lesser, manufacturers.

WASR-10 with PK-23 and the new PK-23 mount from Kalinka. Works great. Doesn't co-witness, but I think that's a red herring anyway. I can "caveman Eotech" it should the scope fail.
I won't be out nearly as much if that gets stolen than should someone steal one of my soon to be SBR'd Dracos and their H-1s or my 107FR and its Ml2. Price tag for the setup? $250 (scope and mount). Get the scope from Eastwave and the mount from Kalinka and you're G2G.

You go with the design for that weapon a side mount like this one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/matrosov/Scope2.jpg. You can get a side mount plate and three rivets if not already installed on your rifle at k-var. If you're not mechanically inclined have a competent gunsmith install it for you so it is level and tight. Your scope will never have problem holding zero that way.

Hey Mat, what light mount/light combo is that? I've been looking for something just likt it.
matrosov
It is this guy. http://www.surefire.com/ClassicUniversalSystemWeaponLights I didn't pay 300 for it but it was still expensive. If you want to build your own, a surefire M14 mount http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/524200-REG/Surefire_M14_Weaver_Rifle_Mount_M14.html and any weaver based weapon light+pressure switch will work.

I just did this with one of my 74s. Check the picture thread in the 74 sub-forum. I got my Aimpoint Micro H1 for $462 (IIRC) shipped. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but I can tell you that this setup is extremely light. The Aimpoint Micro adds virtually no weight to the rifle. While I like the PK-01-V on my other 74, the weight of that one, combined with the mount, is noticeable.

Does anybody know what the parallax on the PK23 scope is. 25m? 50m? Thanks,
Axel

Also POSP delivers internationally (www.posp.ru). How about RS34 with BP-2 mount?
Also there is PK-AS.
I have PK-A and I am quite satisfied with it. It's not the lightest and I think it isn't most modern. But there is something I like.

I went with a customized BP-02 mount and an Aimpoint Comp ML2.
It's been just awesome.

BTT...
Could I get a better pic of that customized BP-02? I like the looks of that.
Ooops! Banned, nevermind!
