Papua New Guinea Customs officials have seized an assortment of deadly weapons from a passenger arriving in the country on a flight from the Philippines.

The contraband included four high-powered Colt assault rifles, a 9mm Glock semi-automatic pistol and assault rifle parts, The National newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The unidentified passenger arrived at Jackson International Airport in the capital Port Moresby on an Air Niugini flight from Manila at 5am on Sunday.

The man said he was transporting the weapons for a licensed arms dealer, but Customs officers said he was no longer employed by the firm.

It is very unlikely that the man brought the weapons in legally, because firms engaged in such trade always ensure proper paperwork is in place prior to import, Customs Commissioner Gary Juffa told the paper.

The man is facing a fine of between $A2,000 and $A20,000 for importing restricted items under the PNG Customs Act.

Police said they would conduct separate investigations to identify the intended destination or recipient of the high-powered weapons and may lay separate charges against the man, including possession of illegal firearms.

High-powered guns are widely used in tribal warfare in PNG's Highlands region, and Port Moresby also faces a serious law and order problem with carjackings at gunpoint a daily occurrence.
