View Thread: Just currious, 9x18 and .380

What would happen if someone accidentally chambered and pulled the trigger on either one in a pistol chambered for the other..? Since they are so damn close I wonder what the "issues" might be.

The reason I ask is because I read a bulletin from Suarez Int. (http://http://www.suarezinternationalstore.com/index.asp) about "ammo scrounging" off the ground while training being a bad idea. The main reason they sighted was accidentally loading and trying to fire the wrong caliber in your AK, for instance .223 vs 5.45x39. My first question about this was what kind of idiot couldn't tell the difference between a .223 round and a 5.45x39..?!?! They are so completely different that such a mistake seems impossible to me. But apparently it has happened at his school because he sighted the consequences of such a mistake in detail.

Holy shit what kind of knuckleheads are showing up out there..?!?! :uhoh_smal

9x18 is larger in diameter. I doubt it could be fired in a 380 pistol. I have seen people fire 380 in 9mm pistols. Not a big safety issue but in the larger 9x18 the bullet might be able to turn a bit inside the barrel which might not be a good thing. I've seen people fire 9mm in 40 S&W, 40 S&W in 10mm and even 357 Sig in 40 S&W.

First Rate freakin' Knuckleheads!!!

There ALL over the place.

You ought to see it when four of 'em pull up to an intersection with four stop signs at the same time.

Do some research. You can shoot the .380 in a 9x18. The .380 is about 12k cup and the 9x19 is about 22-24 cup. It would be STUPID to fire a 9x18 in a .380. Mixing ammo is stupid and dangerous.

Oh I've seen it...

Yer just sitting behind one of "said knuckleheads" and none of them are willing to make the first move..!

Win ... not to hijack the thread ... but ..

some DICK in a road department has installed a REAL, HONEST TO GOD, NEW JERSEY STYLE TRAFFIC CIRCLE IN NOGA!!!

Its got to be the only one I know of in Georgia ... and its in a place where it simple does NOT make sense ...

The locals have NEVER seen a traffic circle before ... or a New Jersey Jug Handle for that matter.

Its turned into a REAL intelligence test.

Sadly ... most of the folks that encounter it ... fail miserably.

I hope they install some sort of camera at this intersection just to caputure some of the funnier moments.

Yep.

Some folks will mix ammo and try to shoot it.

Most of them will only do it ... JUST ONE TIME.

They did that on Clearwater Beach too, funny.

Case rupture is inevitable when the round is smaller than the chamber. I had a H&K P4 that cracked Federal cases. They shot fine in a Browning BDA. Other cases were ok.
Last week I saw a 1911 that a guy tried to chamber .45 long colt shotshell in and the gun didn't go intyo battery till he pounded on it and then he hesitated and thought 'that ain't right!', and brought it to the shop to un-jam the mess. The gun was ok and he didn't fire it, but I suspect there woulda been a bigger mess if he had. It's only a miracle we don't see more stuff blown up

380 in a 9 makarov bells and splits the cases

380 and 9x19 in an Astra 400 chambered for 9x21 fires reliably, but 380 doesn't eject reliably,no cases damage, not good for the long firing pin

9x19 in 762x25 cz-52 can leave the jacket in the neck of the chamber, but throws the lead core down range,,,,,,,,,,,don't let moronic mouth breathin window lickers loose unattended around your guns

Now that's an interesting little tid bit of information..!

Theoretically could you cut down 7.62x25 brass and reload it with 9mm..?

Or does the 7.62x25 casing taper too much..?

That's like the guy who came in our gunshop back in the
early 90s saying he had a rifle that would shoot anything.

He was putting rifle rounds in a .410 and leaning the
gun back to fire them.

Friggin' crazy banjo picker.

Y'know ... I was sittin' in church this past Sunday ... and I kinda' got "convicted" about my posts in this thread.

Like ... People who live in glass houses shouldn't chuck rocks ...

D'jewknowatahmean?

I mean there WAS that time that I poked that LLLlllloonnngg skinny screw driver through my right nostril, from the bottom side and nearly took out my eye. Of COURSE I didn't go to the Doctor and get it looked at ...and it infected and festered up ... jist like my wife said it would.

But I wasn't convicted about that.

Nope. The Lord, Our God reminded me about the time I thought I had a dirty connection in a de-humifdifyer ... so I took it apart, plugged it back in ... and was settin' to clean EVERYTHING inside it with a can of Electrickety Contact Cleaner ... and the damn thing cycled it self "ON".

I'm pretty certain I discovered JET PROPULSION in my basement at that very moment.

The good news is it only took about a month for all the hair to grow back.

"Stupid" can befall just about anybody at any given moment.

I think if a person "claims" they have NEVER pulled anything stupid in their life, they are either a liar or have no concept of reality.

So yes, I know what'cha mean...! :wink_smal

I have seen it happen to some very experienced shooters. I once knew a guy that reloaded for his deer rifles. he had loaded some for his .270 and didnt have a box for them so he placed them in an empty 7mm Rem Mag box. got in a hurry on the way out the door to the range & grabbed the wrong box. long story short he f-ed up a perfectly good rifle by loading .270 ammo into his 7 Mag. this was a guy that had been shooting for the better part of 30 years without incident. I hear quite a few of my hunting acquaintances say dumb things about loading weaker cartridges into a gun chambered for something similar but stronger. its been my experience that there is a fine line between a momentary lapse and rampant stupidity. had another guy I hunt with that I had to literally remove the firearm from his hands before he shot some of his .300 Win Mag through my pristine .300 Weatherby. you might be surprised at what otherwise intelligent men can pull outta their asses from time to time.

winston
This is all fine and dandy, as a matter of fact a "momentary laps" is quite common place for even the most intelligent among us.

But...

Not noticing the difference between 5.56x45 and 5.45x39 is as far as I can tell,... inexcusable...

I'm just a say'n... :sidegrin_

as opposed to a .270 and a 7mm rem (belted) magnum? shit happens
