View Thread: Paint question

If I wanted to use some kind of paint to touch up a few spots on an AK (i.e. an Arsenal), which kind is best? Can I simply dab a tiny amount of paint over the area or do I have to prime, etc.?
Thanks,
Chris

I don't about the current Arsenals but I know the earlier ones had lot of complaints of peeling and chipping paint. For just touch up, if you really want to bother, you could most likely use some semi gloss black Duracoat. It doesn't have to be the supper high temp stuff that is meant to be baked on as it takes a while to cure without baking. Maybe the standard high temp Duracoat that isn't meant to be baked on. I forget the temp ratings. I'd expect it chip off too though and the Arsenal finish may continue to come off a bit. The missing paint shouldn't hurt anything. The factory Polish Tantals have some cheap flaking paint on them and they still work.

Most of the gun paints really need abrasive blasting or a layer of parkerizing to adhere well. I suspect that if your current finish is flecking off that any other will too unless you do something to give it a good base to grab on to.
Also, they need to be applied with an airbrush or, in a few cases, a rattle can. They aren't formulated for touchup brushes - they are very thin.
You might try just a daub of close matching touchup paint if the repair is real small. If you get gun cleaner/solvent on the touch up paint it will likely wipe off.
What's the biggest area you want to touch up?
AKBLUE
If you have metal showing through just clean the area with alcohol to degrease. Do not use anything strong or you will loose more opaint. Then just touch up with cold blue. It will hide the silver show through well enough.

The area is really small actually. What is cold bl8ue?? Where do you get it?
AKBLUE
Cold Blue is a easy application used to blue firearms or parts without the use of heat and other more complex procedures. It is available at Cabellas, Walmart and sportuing good stores. Normally in 3 or 4 ounce containers under various names. Look for Gun Blue in the sporting goods dept.

if you plan to tocuh-up be sure to use a compatible paint! it sounds like-allesonogwat hit the nail on the head with a semi-gloss black if that's what you got on it?
no need for a primer-just air bush it on(mist it) till it covers,,,allow to dry for each light coat....bake on if it's bake on, if not just let it dry.
i would just mist the area lightly to blend it in... if you screw-up you can always re-paint the whole thing! lol
a quik fix you can do what - akblue says.

compatble yes. engine paint will remove some combloc finishes. just like on brazilian vw parts.

Oxpho Blue liquid from Browells is my favorite cold blue.
For all cold blues you need to make sure the surface is clean, clean, clean and apply it with the part warmed up a bit as it speeds up the staining.
