View Thread: Fat mothers-to-be banned from giving birth at their local hospital

hub999
Pregnant women are to be barred from giving birth at their local hospital if midwives consider them to be too fat, it emerged today.

Mothers-to-be with a body mass index of over 34 – the equivalent of a woman of 5ft 6in weighing 15 stone - will be turned away from the unit because of fears among staff that obese patients could die there during child birth.

Instead they will then be forced to travel a further 20 miles to another hospital which boasts a more high-tech maternity unit.

Body mass index calculations are used to work out whether or not a person is a healthy weight for their height. A BMI of over 30 is considered obese, and over 40 is very obese.

Mothers-to-be with a high BMI are believed to carry an increased risk of bleeding and complications during labour.

Today a spokesman for the Weston General Hospital in Somerset said they did not have the facilities to deal with more complicated births.

She said: 'The unit is midwife led, and there are no specialist consultants present. There never have been.

'It is designed to be a more homely and more simple place to give birth, which some mothers like.'

But she added: 'If there is a risk of complications, whether that's a history of difficult births, or diabetes or anything that means more specialist equipment may be needed, mothers are told right from the start that they will need to Bristol.'

Yesterday, however, the policy triggered claims that larger women are being unfairly treated.

Carole Welch, who runs a local Slimming World class said it was wrong that bigger women could not safely give birth near their homes and be forced to travel to a unit in Bristol instead.

Well thats a real high class, well thought and incredibly intelligent, response to the discrimination taking place in England (sic)... You think its about discrimination?

Doctors and hospitals LOVE fat people, sick people, stupid people and INSURED people.

Its the insurance comapnies that are forcing the doctors to not take the clients. Because they stand to loose money via lawsuits for wrongful death ect. If they are not healthy enough to give birth.... Y THE HELL NOT SEND EM SOMEPLACE THAT CAN KEEP EM ALIVE!!!!!

Nobody is hurting them in anyway.... just making them drive an extra 20 minutes to go someplace where they can be properly cared for.

Its a stupid argument. One you cant win.

P.S. Thank you for being a contributor and thank you for likeing the boondock saints.

Not so much trying to argue the point, or validations of same - insofar as the language seemed unwarranted.

I can agree it has roots in insurance and coverage issues.

There are too many fatties around, so this is one way of killing them off.

(As I myself am 250lbs, the above cannot be seen as prejudiced ;) ).

pretty soon it will be illegal to be fat, to BIG a burden on society. smokers, fattie's and alcoholics will need to pay an extra share or go to jail. Drug addicts are OK, cuz it's they're parents or societys fault. Those in jail can work building more jails for 3 dollars a day to pay they're health insurance premiums. It won't be enough to cover the whole bill so the rest goes to the rears. Then we can put them in jail again for not having insurance.

Common sense measure for the moms and the babies.

Nothing here to get worked up about.

The obese moms could be difficult deliveries.

The worst ones were the ones who waited until their mid-30s or later to have a kid and are out of shape, desk jocky types.
Giving birth is a workout and it helps to be in shape. The flabby, soft, out of shape ones can't push worth a damn and it can put their kids at risk. They poop out half way through the delivery. Not good.

Always knew when I got one like that it was going to be a long, drawn out ordeal with more risk.

Home insurance company sends spies to determine if your home is worth insuring.
Got any dogs? What breed? If mixed, what color is the tongue?
Got a trampoline? Got a diving board or slide on your pool?
Health insurance is offering free flu shots and a free comprehensive physical?
Are they feeling benevolent, or just looking for preexisting medical conditions?
Will the doctor ask if I own any guns?
Auto insurance pays telemarketers to call me and ask how many miles I drive every week, and then a week later raise my premiums causing my blood pressure to rise sending me to my doctor who reports my condition to the insurance company.
Don't trust anyone working for insurance companies.
Don't trust anyone working for the government.
Trust in God, everyone else has ulterior motives.

This has nothing to do with insurance companies.

One concern is that the fatties will colapse the second floor framing as some of the local hositals are 100s of years old. It's in the story.

You know I just caught myself...

My PC indoctorinated brain did not like what Knall said.

Fact is - he is right in so much as they are fatties. Period. And further fatties strain the system, hospitals not designed for their girth - amublances, stretchers and of course the system and insurance itself. And despite limited medical conditions there is no reason for it. Just another sign of soceities inability to control themselves.

I was just thinking of Beck and his take on PC the other day. He missed one thing - they sneak it into our verbage and soon enough we are using PC terms, being PC and chastising others. It is then self-perpetuating thought control in its barest sense.

Calling something what it is - is just that. Unless ill intent is meant it is just a descriptor.

Bastards.

Okay rant off - got a little off topic but thought what the hell.

When I returned from Iraq the biggest thing that stuck out was how fat Americans are. You don't notice it much until your away for awhile. personally i hate eating. You have to cook, clean, go to the store, use gas and electric, spend half your hard earned money then once you eat you have to take a crap and flush all that time and money. People look at eating all wrong, but then if you watch TV for more than 3 minutes you will see someone having the best time in theyre life shoving foodi they're face, and they are not fat.

"but then if you watch TV for more than 3 minutes you will see someone having the best time in theyre life shoving foodi they're face, and they are not fat."

that's where binging and purging coupled with judicious use of tape worms comes in!
