Prague - The Czech Communists (KSCM) want Defence Minister Martin Bartak to propose systemic changes to the army to the lower house, KSCM deputies' group head Pavel Kovacik said today, adding that recent scandals such as the cases of soldiers leaning to neo-Nazism, mean a failure of the ministry management.
If Bartak fails to submit a set of draft effective measures to the lower house's session in December, the KSCM would push for him to be dismissed from his post, Kovacik told reporters.
"This is no individual failure in the difficult conditions of the soldiers' operation in the Afghan mission, but rather a managerial failure in the system of directing the military and the defence sector," Kovacik said.
A few days ago it turned out that two members of the Czech elite unit in Afghanistan wore Nazi SS symbols on their helmets. Both have been dismissed from the military and their commander has been put off duty.
Daily Mlada fronta Dnes today writes about another scandal of Czech soldiers in the KFOR mission in Kosovo. They reportedly got drunk in September and provoked a brawl in which a Finnish colleague got involved.
Chief-of-staff Vlastimil Picek said earlier today that the soldiers have faced disciplinary punishment.
The military today admitted that four members of the Czech KFOR unit in Kosovo smoke marijuana or hashish a couple of weeks ago. The culprits have been put off duty and the case is being handled by the military police.
