new book argues the American dream for middle-class citizens is being destroyed by a federal government that has become so large it cannot operate intelligently.
New York Times best-selling author Martin Gross argues that politicians of both parties are destroying the "soul and guts of the nation" -- the middle class -- by contributing to a massive federal deficit that is projected to grow by $9.3 trillion over the next decade.
In his new book National Suicide: How Washington is Destroying the American Dream from A to Z, Gross contends that the American people are committing national suicide -- and they that are only first beginning to understand it as the word "trillion" overtakes the former word "billion."
"We're paying only 4.5 percent interest now, but remember [under] Jimmy Carter it was 16 percent," he notes. "You could easily with inflation go to 10 percent, which means that the interest on the national debt would be $2.5 trillion a year -- which means that there will be no Social Security, there will be no Medicare, no Medicaid. The country will be bankrupt."
And that, he argues, would have dire consequences. "Remember, we did not defeat the Soviet Union on the battlefield -- they went bankrupt," he points out. "And that could possibly be America's unfortunate step. And the only way to stop it is to stop the federal government in its present road to oblivion."
Gross says the country should heed James Madison's warning about the "tyranny of the majority." The author notes that the majority of Americans pay no income tax -- all of the bottom half pay 3.5 percent of the budgets, mostly through FICA tax; the rich pay 30 percent; and the middle-class pay two-thirds of the bill and cannot afford it.
