View Thread: Firing pin retaining pin issues

I have an Arsenal milled AK that I broke/mushroomed a firing pin in. I removed the firing pin to look at what type I needed, and then I put it back. I got a replacement, and have since broken 2 1/16" punches trying to remove the retaining pin. I have tried spraying some lube down in the hole(before I broke the 2nd punch). Am I doing something wrong? Or otherwise, any ideas?

1]Are you driving it out the correct direction?

2]If you are, you may need a better quality punch.

One trick I've heard is to cut a nail off--not super hard but harder than some of the cheaper punches. You could cut it off short and hold in place with a needled nose, bolt in a vice.

Otherwise you might have to drill it out and you sure don't want to mangle the hole for the pin. It could be slightly bent.

Does the firing pin move at all in the channel?
Rotate a little even?

not sure what the milled ak's bolt looks like? but on my stamped amd and romie g, the retaining pins came out easy. going back is was easy also.

but my retaining pin for the extractor on the romie was a pain... easy removing, hard to re-install.

for the firing pin retaining pin i am not sure what direction i removed it from? i believe i knoocked it out top to bottom... and re-installed it reverse. sale with extractor pin. also, on the extractor pin re-install ya have to push the upper bolt face area extractor in as you tap in the pin for the extractor. goes in diaogonally. go in the big hole side, remove and install from same side. this is obvious! lol

Use a larger pointed punch to get it started.... they wont bend ect. Then push it threw with an apropriately shaped sized punch.
