View Thread: Here's another AMD-65 thread.

Well, I just decided what the heck and bought one today for $450. I had a coupon for $50 off, BUT it only works on full price guns, and this one was already on sale... GAY!! But whatever.
It's a TGI FEG. They had 2, so I spent sometime looking at both, and I went with the one I got mainly because the mag well was tighter.
This is my first 7.62 AK. Very fun to shot, good accuracy too considering the short barrel and sight radius.
Now I just need to get some good mags and some ammo.

I was going to get some of the Yugo 30 rd mags from sportsmen's guide. Are those good?
Trueno
Those have original length AMD barrels huh? If so, then you'll love it. Beats the heck out've those 16" barreled abortions that others sell, I do NOT consider those to be AMD's anymore.
It's been said that there's something about how x39 round does extremely well with the original length barrels, can't remember the specifics but maybe someone will chime in with the info. I love mine, it's one of my "can't miss with my eyes closed" guns.
As far as the Yugo mags, no idea why there would be any problems with them.

The 20 round Hungarians work best in an AMD. No interference with the front han grip and look in scale on the rifle. Check Copes and Apex etc. for mags.

Trueno, my muzzlebrake obviously has the extension welded on, so technically the barrel isn't the original length..
So these have chrome lined barrels?

Not the original length exactly, but underneath that single dot of silver solder lies a true Hungarian barrel. So while your barrel has been brought up to the legal non-SBR length by means of an extension segment and the original brake... it's still the real deal aside from that.
What he's talking about are the rifles that have been shlupped together with either American, or "who knows" barrels and they lack the original AMD 65 sight radius (with the gas block / front sight in close proximity) and have a 16" barrel with the front sight on the end of the barrel like any other AK.
Or with the barrel sticking out past the front sight post... in again, another abnormal variation and interpretation of what an AMD 65 should be.
As far as the rifling and actual barrel length that matters. You have an AMD-65 minus some full auto parts. And a lot closer of a specimen to the real deal than many others out there.
I have one too. Same thing as yours from TGI. It's a feather weight AK that shoots well, and has the slickest action out of the many other Kalashnikov pattern weapons I am fortunate enough to have.
As far as mags the original Hungarian "tanker" mags fit the best. If found in good condition these look as good as the function. Honestly they are just great mags to have in general for all 7.62 AK's. That being said you can even get 40rd mags to work in the AMD. Romanian, Bulgarian, Pro-mag... all kinds of mags in 20, 30, and 40rd capacity will work. The new Korean ones floating around lately did not fit in mine though. The 40's are also the least tactical reload you will ever do in your life. They require almost perfect alignment to get them in with the front grip. But just about any good 7.62 AK mags will work fine in the AMD.
AMD's are cool!

I read somewhere that some TGI AMD's have American made barrels? Is that true? Shouldn't there be some markings on it that will identify it as Hungarian? There are markings on the barrel, I just don't know what they mean!
Asmodeus
No idea about the barrels being American or Hungarian. First I heard that.
Shizzlore
Well most places say they are Hungarian barrels, but some say American. Can anyone tell me how to tell if my barrel is Hungarian?
lehigh
If the muzzel brake is long(sticks out real long from face of front sight) to make it 16" it should be the Hungarian 12.5"
barrel.
Look at the chamber end and you should also see the chrome lining on the face of the barrel.

+1 Aim surplus also has a good deal on them

Stay away from the 20 rd mags from SG. If they dont say Hungarian stay away.
I bought 5 and had to send them all back. 2 of them fell out. Pure Shit.
