View Thread: Draco AK 47 Pistol

OK, I've gone crazy. I now have a Draco AK47 Pistol, that I picked up from Classic Arms, that came from Century Arms. It's fun, but I need to know a few things.
1. Must a pistol follow the 922r rules. :huh_small These have a spot welded muzzel piece and I want to remove it and put on a real flash suppressor.
2. I know I can not get a butt stock for it without going the full SBR route, but what if I make one that pops on and off without any modificatins to the pistol?
3. Another issue would be is it possible to replace or modify the lower front wood furniture with something that offers a better hold/grip for shooting? :small_gri I've noticed that from the hip, it's OK, but if you really want to use the sights, it's very hard to hold/control just to aim easily.
4. Do most internal parts from an AK 47 fit the DRACO Pistol, and will the Wood Furniture and Hand Grip fit also?
I hope some one has an answer or an idea about these questions?
Thanks
knall
DONT put a stock of any kind on it.
DONT put a forward pistol grip of any kind on it.
BOTH big no-no's
As far as I am aware..... (check local laws) there is no reason you cant remove there muzzle device and do whatever you want.
Last I checked ak pistols were not held acountable for 922 compliancy...... and if another company made it..... you have no worries regardless.
cdwoods
Will some AK 47 internal parts fit? If I ever need parts, no one offers Draco Parts.
KernelKrink
The Draco is essentially a standard Romanian AKM with a short bbl and pistol type rear trunnion. All standard pattern AKM internals should fit, the shortened front end might use some proprietary parts but that is about it. The gas piston might be shorter for instance, or the forearm.

OK, I can't make changes that I want, since this is a pistol. :( What do I need to do to convert this to a Short Barreled Rifle? :cool_smal With out a butt stock or a forward grip, it sucks to try and do any accurate shooting with the weapon. Sure, it's fun as heck from the hip, but I want to use the sights to shoot.

You could always learn the Israeli sling method.
All you need to convert it to an SBR is $200. You can then put a stock of any kind on it, using any methods you like.
KernelKrink
Yeah, just pay the tax and get the paperwork approved, then add a stock. I would recommend the ACE folder, you can drill and tap the existing rear trunnion to take the folder mechanism. Almost all other stocks would require replacing the pistol rear trunnion.
cdwoods
Sorry, but who would I contact to pay the $200. for permission to do this? If I understand this correctly, I can not drill or do anything at all, until I have received permission? Just one little hole???
knall
You would be amazed what ONE LITTLE HOLE on an AK can cost. Depends on the hole.
Someone will probably link it..... but you need to file for an SBR stamp through the ATF.

I'd like to hear more about this sling method :)

I'm also very interested in what is the Israeli Sling Method?
However, I think a Romanian Side Folding Stock would be my best option. I found an under folder stock, but that may require too many changes. If I keep the original end piece, it's simpler. I know it's classified as a pistol, but the Draco just seems to be screeming for a folding stock of any type.

You install a sling on your Draco/Champion as shown in this picture of an AOW:
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/9715/aow.jpg
The gun pictured above is an NFA weapon. Do not install a vertical foregrip on your Draco/Champion pistol w/o the appropriately approved tax forms.
This is not my picture. It was obtained via GIS (http://images.google.com) for demonstration purposes.
You then loop the sling around your primary shoulder and adjust it so that when you have the weapon extended, the sling allows about the same length of pull that a fixed stock would.
Isometric pressure (you pushing against yourself) will provide a (semi)steady firing position.
Will it be as good as having a fixed stock? No, but it'll be lots better than 'free handing" it.

but with an ACE sidefolder stock. you could probably put a stock and foregrip on it under the table, but you would never be able to show the rifle in public or use it to defend yourself = not worth it.

To add the sling holder, did you modify, drill or replace the trunnion on the rear of the weapon? I understood I could not do anything until after I get an approval from the ATF.

Sling is fine.
You can't have a buttstock of ANY kind, or a front pistol grip.
Those would make it an illegal SBR or AOW, respectively.
Cool little weapon. I'd like one myself.
Firefly
I'd like this weapon too,I'm seriously thinking about picking one up at the end of the year.

You said it, "it's fun as heck from the hip", install a good laser pointer on it and call it a day. This way you have less rounds wasted walking it to the target.
The thing is designed for close range, sort of spray and pray.
cdwoods
If you are intested in one, Classic Arms has them for $349.00 at this time. About a month ago they were $399.00 each. Not Bad.

They're designed with a folding stock and vertical foregrip for close range - two features we can't have on a "pistol". The lack of these two items definitely puts it in the "spray and pray" category.

Who makes the hand guards on this beauty? Looks like just what I've been wanting for my Draco!

midwest industries. someone on here or sksboards has them for $100.

Sweet! Thanks! Time to go shopping.

I have an AK pistol and changed out the front stock ferrule to take standard AK furniture and put some East German plastic furniture on it. I chose the EG furniture because it kept the weight down witin NYS legal limits. I put a 74 style break on (it works fabulously well, but the concussion is brutal)! I put a FAL swivel on the side of the receiver where Century has a filler rivet in a hole meant for a rifle trunion. It required drilling it a little larger and the swivel fit right in. I had to sandwich the receiver metal between 2 thick washers so the swivel wouldn't wobble in the hole. I use the Israeli sling method with mine and it works wonderfully well. My AK pistol is one of my top 3 favorite guns, and one of my go-to guns if things get lumpy around Mi Casa.
nframe
I've got an AK pistol that I picked up last year, 11.5" Romy Century import. Shoots like a champ, from the bench it'll shoot just as well as a full sized AK. I got it as my get out of the ghetto gun, scary looking with lot's of firepower and the ability to penetrate cover, does it's job well!

Nice rig, nframe! You got yours for very much the same reasons that I got mine. I am adversly conditioned to being out gunned in the city, and I like to turn people's urban cover into concealment!
Where did you get the rail system for your gun? I usually have a deep and abiding hatred for such crap, but in this case I could see a rail system and a lazer could be right handy.
drjarhead
Yeah, that is a nice setup.
N16ht5 also has a nice set up. Sweet.
Wish I could swing one right now.

It's the UTG quad rail, I got mine from CTD for $70 IIRC. It's not a Surefire rail but it fits well and is well machined. Only issue with it is that it blocks the sights, hence the red dot other than that I love it!

Classic Arms have the Draco AK pistol back in stock. I don't need one but I sure want one!

This post is right on time as I just ordered a draco and an rpk yesterday..was wondering what all I could do to the draco..I have an Enforcer 3000 and its basically the same premise as the draco but man o man you have to wear ear protection or your ears will buzz for 20 minutes after touching it off..are these as bad noisewise?

Nothing is free...
if you shoot a round designed to have the powder burn completely in 16 to 20 inches(AK and SKS), then you shouldn't be surprised that there is still plently of powder to burn when the bullet comes out of the end of an approximately 10" pistol barrel :laugh_sma
same thing happens when you shoot a 7.62x54 round out of an M44 as opposed to 91/30
the powder has to do something...it's going to burn outside the barrel
lest you think I'm dissing AK pistols..I'm not..I've built 2 of them..one for me..one for my son.If I'm ever in a fight in a phone booth, I'll probably win
appreciate your pistol for what it is..you'll probably shoot it once or twice and then put it up...most folks do.Don't expect to hit much with it past 25 yards or so
AK pistols are like handi rifles in 45/70...they get bought tried and sold in short order, and the only people who will buy them have never owned them :laugh_sma
you might want to use plugs and muffs
IanMor
I love mine! I shoot it all the time! (ditto about the plugs and muffs)

Just ordered a Draco through Centerfiresystems ($329.00). It is on backorder and will be sent in the order received (according to them).
I see that some of you have gotten the SBR approval. My question is, by adding a stock does this not violate 922R?
KernelKrink
Not of you add enough US made parts to keep the foreign parts count at 10.
rongaudier
Hmm, might make more sense to start with a compliant rifle and put a shorter barrel on it. I think I'll leave my Draco alone thanks.

. . . ahhh, but that can lead to many more problems than you're aware of.
These gas systems are tuned to the weapon, and when you go mixmastering parts (such as stiking a new shorter barrel on a "compliant rifle"), you can end up with a paperweight at best, or the ol' KABOOM at worst. .
The beauty of SBR'g these Romanian pistols is that it's already all set up from the factory for the short barrel.
Q: Besides, what do compliance parts cost?
A: Not much

The show wasn't as big as I expected for driving a 140 miles but I did come accross several New Romanian Dracos, most were a little over $400. Take in consideration though if you order, you have to pay shipping on top of your FFL dealers paper work charge. The least expensive I've still seen for ordering a single Draco is $349, add all incidental charges you're over $400, so I guess if you can get it out the door for $400, you have saved time and waiting and maybe some money. I really like the light blonde wood on the Draco. Every time I shoot I wear ear protection
More SKS's at show than I've seen in a while. Came across a Russian SKS, that was a litle rough around the edges for $400. I have a mint Chinese SKS, so I don't need a used beater, even if it is a Russian.

Today I celebrated my 55th Birthday. :) Got away from the house for a couple of hours and went through 200 rounds with the Draco. :cool_smal What a hoot, nice cold day and had the range to myself. :AR15firin I do want to follow up on the SBR issue since these are fun and it just screams for a butt stock, forward grip handle and a decent scope. :the_finge
