View Thread: Mosin Muzzle Threads
009.5
Hello,
I know that roughly half the people that read this will call sacreledge, but I am interested in threading a Mosin 14mmX1 LH, and need to know if this is a lathe-only proposition, or if this would work:

the only concern I have, the muzzle OD is about .685". Will this tool also take the diameter down, or will it have to be turned with a lathe? If a lathe is required, the tool is pointless, as a single-point thread while mounted would be easy. Having said that, are there any good outfits in WA that would do the threading for a reasonable fee? Thanks!

Hello 009.5! Welcome to the Files. I have used the thread alignment tool and die set up from Preciseinnovations for threading the muzzle of a couple of SKS's. Worked great! If you are planning on threading your Mosin you will of course need to remove the front sight-bayo lug assembly in order to thread the muzzle. I used the 9/16 x 24 RH for the SKS's to accept a FAL flash suppressor.
The OD on most of my Mosins is aprox. .567. the thread alignment tool for the 9/16 x 24 measures .556. I have a m38 on a m44 stock that I would like to thread the muzzle on. I believe the 9/16 would do the trick, but I have yet to give it a shot. The die is adjustable and will open enough to get the thread's started I'm sure. The key is to remove the bayo-sight assembly without damaging it or the barrel so that it can be re-installed after the threading is complete. I went with a scope on the SKS's so I did not have to re-attach the bayo-sight base on them. Have you picked out the flash suppressor you are going to use?

there are some Mosins..the rarer ones, that I would reccomend against modifying them, but the dime store variety 91/30's and M44's..have at it :small_gri
Most of the purists don't hang out here..we don't meet their specifications
Pat(Mosinutty) knows what he's talkin about...I suggest soaking the pins/mounts in some sort of oil for a few days before you try to remove them..or try a MAPP torch

I saw this the other day.

Well guys, thanks for the info. It looks like it is a lathe-only job, since the OD will be too large (major diameter for 14X1mm looks to be around 14.2mm max). That said, can anyone recommend a good smith or otherwise to do the spinnin' and threadin'? How much will this set me back?

p.s. probably going to get the threading set regardless, it looks to be the cat's toenails.

Good luck with ordering anything from Precise Innovations, LLC. This was for the 14mm x 1mm LH die set. I placed a order with them..... 2 weeks went by, I sent several emails nothing. Placed another order with Midway and Victor Machinery Exchange Inc. Received them items from Midway and Victor, 3 more days passed and Precise emails me that they were moving. I cancelled the order with them. The Die is way cheaper with Victor.
I threaded a M44 and installed a Type 74 muzzle brake, Did one like this a few years back worked great.
