View Thread: Ammo for PSL?
ccsniper
I have a PSL and am wondering just what ammo sits best in your gun. I know that every gun is different but it will help me to get a ballpark of where to start. I have heard good things about czech light ball, bulgarian lps, and hungarian light ball. I have shot prvi partisan (wolf gold) and get about 2" groups, plus I have shot some of my precious czech light ball through it and got 4" groups from that stuff. Russian light ball is all over the place and that is all the ammo I have shot through it, around 100 through it. So what are the best ammo choices you have for your PSL? I have some bulgarian I have yet to shoot, and plan on getting some hungarian, and some wolf cheapie stuff, what else should I shoot to find out what shoots best in my PSL?

For me, it's non-corrosive ammo when possible due to the PSL's gas system. I don't mind corrosive ammo in bolt guns, but in semis I try to avoid it. I do have some Slovak light ball (corrosive) that is OK but I use it sparingly. Century's Hot Shot (Romanian made, supposedly specifically for the PSL)is non-corrosive but it's just so-so. Best ammo in my shooting of the PSL is Wolf Gold...light ball, reloadable and tres' expensive.

I have shot over 400 rounds of the russian silver tip and for me it isn't all over the place but in tight groups at 100 yards. My range is small and short but still I think the ammo is great I rarely have one fly even when the barrel is very hot.

Mine likes the czech light ball. Now that said it also likes the 1963 light ball the best. I have 63,65,67 and 68. At 200 yards if I do my part I can get a 3" 5 shot group slow fire with the 63. The others are about 4"+ at 200 yards.
The good thing is I have 3 tins plus some loose of the 63. The bulgy brass cased was as good in mine but I had to get rid of it after the kabooms reported.
I have not tried the Hungarian light ball and the 7N1 was a 5" group in mine. As always YMMV. Mine is an early DIG import.

I was not impressed with the 7N1 either..
However the CZECH L/B shoots great..
Love the rifle though..

About 2 MOA with Czech light ball, 4 MOA with Russian silver tips, and somehow about 8 MOA with Prvi Partizan. Too bad Czech is no where to be found right now.

for some odd reason mine doesn't like the czech for tight groups. Although I haven't shot it a whole lot, anyone know if the PSL has a break in period? I am guessing it does since mine is a new rifle.

Be aware that 7N1/7N14 has other properties that make it desirable in certain circumstances and is generally wasted on paper targets.

Has there been any modern ballistics tests on 7n1 to test the tumble?

Oh I'm not gonna burn it all up.. :wink_smal
Just wanted to see how it would do in the ROMAK since it was touted as being very accurate... For me it seems to shoot better in the Bolt guns..
As far as a break in I don't know? Maybe, I just shoot mine and clean it when I get home.. The only thing I don't do is just sit there and throw rounds downrange.. Usually shoot 5-10 rds and then shoot sumpin else fer a few minutes..
From what I understand the Hungy L/B is also good ammo but I have not opened any of that yet? The CZECH L/B has been a pretty consistant round in most of my Rifles chambered for X 54R.. However some of the FINNS do prefer the H/B over L/B..

Doesn't the ammo wideners has look like it is Hungarian? They are who I normally buy my ammo from because I'm fairly close and I've seen it before, just questioned whether or not it is Czech. I have some Hungarian and it looks the same.

Shoots nicely in mine for plinking but there is no substitute for a quality handload tailored to your rifles liking. :)

I have only tried the Russian silver tip light ball so far. But I don't have a single complaint.
In fact, the rifle and this ammo shoots better than I can. I managed to put three shots in the same hole at 60yds shooting off a stick prone. I'm not kidding. I picked up a broken piece of stick with a good "v" to it, set it against a range bag to lay the rifle in, and put 3 bullets in one hole egging it out into a triangle. The rifle was both warm, and slightly dirty.
I realize that isn't 100m. But... as far as some of the things I've read about the PSL. I was happy with that considering it was surplus. And that was only the third time out with the PSL. I'm an "ok" shooter at best. One of you guys with a good trigger and more time behind it probably could have put the whole mag in that same space. (I just cleaned up the original trigger group) I managed to replicate a similar (give or take shape) 3 shot group 3 times that day out of the 60 rounds fired. Out of maybe the 5 or 6 times I honestly tried to shoot a group. Other people were also shooting it too.
I've been very pleased. You read a lot about these guns and ammo, with widely varying opinions. I think I got lucky with both the rifle and the first choice with ammo.
My rifle now has about 220 rounds through it. I'd say it shot better the last time out, but it was probably just me becoming more accustomed to it. It does seem to shoot better dirty and warm for me though. :)

what kind of groups did you get from it? If this stuff hits under 1.5 I won't even bother reloading just stock up on wolf

1.5 to 2 that is pretty good compared to prvi (junk).

Bulgy light ball is probably the best stuff you'll be able to find as far as price and availability goes.
Wolf 148gr is the next kind I'll be trying out.

The Czech has given me pretty decent performance. I did give in to the hype about 7n1 last year and bought a couple of tins. The 7n1 will shoot under an inch at 100 yards out of my gun. If you get in a hurry and get the barrel hot it doesn't matter whats in it though. The Bulgarian,Hungarian and Wolf all seem to shoot about the same out of my gun keeping 2 moa or a little better. The Czech has done a little better than that but not much at all.

This is a repost from another forum and is my favorite range report so far. It shows most of the different ammo on paper or at least mentions how they did through his psl. There wasn't pictures of bulgarian, but he mentioned how it did at least. The 7n1 really showed how accurate a psl can be though, I couldn't believe it. If this doesn't build hype for the 7n1, I don't know what will. It looked like czech was the best out of the mil surplus for accuracy and wolf did better than any surplus.

So far I only have experience with Russian and Bulgarian light ball. Both seem to get down the tube fine. When the rifle was "spanking new" the Russian would jam up say 2/100 rounds. Now both cycle near perfectly. That being said, I fell the Russian hits tighter at least from My rifle. I hope to expand the ammo selection soon!!
In fact We should collectively have an online ammo hunt once a month!!! :small_gri

I like that idea alpinemike!!!

I've only fired 7N1 thus far. 3 round groups are about .5-.75" and 5 round were 1-1.5" @100 yards.
I have some Bulgarian but haven't tried it yet.

I've had great results with Privi Partizan(Wolf Gold). My worst group was a 10 round mag into 4" at 200m. Best group was 4 rounds into 3/4" with 5th flyer opening group to 1 3/8" at 100m. I can put 10 rounds into the center of a small pie plate at 300m(mans head size). That's fine accuracy for me in the real world. Not the bench rest world. I don't own a real rifle rest or even sand bags. I use a pack or a rolled up blanket. It's served me well to shoot improvised rest in 24 years military service.
My first reloads with .308 bullets put groups at 1 1/2" for 100m on average 5 round firings. I purchased 1,000 .311 Privi Partizan bullets to try next. So far all ammo tried has fired accurately in my rifle. I really like my PSL.....Mike

I think mine likes the prvi best, I tried the wold 148 grain bimetal stuff yesterday and didn't even hit the target. I did try some different ammo types yesterday results:
wolf 148 grain polyformance-no idea never even hit the target
prvi partisan 150 grain soft point-2" group just like before
bulgarian lps 10 factory-2.5 to 3" groups
hungarian lps-2.5 to 3" groups
czech silver tip-3 to 4" groups
only the wolf was shot cold bore, everything else the rifle had heated up pretty good so I think that with a cold bore they would have been 3/4 the size of my groups I got with a hot barrel.

Been looking for the 7N1 to try myself, has anyone seen any of it for sale? Or is anyone interested in parting with some?

occasionally you see it on gunbroker, but it is expensive and I think that the guy who sells it only sells it in 440 lots.
