View Thread: Sighting in 5.45x39

winston
Got a scope for my 74 and finally some hollow points so I can shoot the damn thing at a local range and I plan to sight it in next weekend.

Does anyone know what the bullet strike is on a target at 25 and 50 yards..?

When I sighted in my 7.62x54r PSL the strike was 4" inches high at 25 yards.

I can't seem to find any information on the 5.45x39 round on the internet pertaining to this.

That's is about the practicle limit of this cartridge. IMHO

They are the numbers on the adjustable rear site. Not quite as useful as you are using a scope but you can use them as a reference to where you want your zero to be. IE if you are 6cm high at 50 meters you are zeroed for 300 meters. However as your scope is further above the sight line that wouldn't be 100% accurate.

Hmmm, that's interesting, so the 5.45 round has virtually no climb at 50 meters if the rifle is properly zeroed to 100 meters..?

As I wrote earlier, the 7.62x54r round was 4" high at 25 yards, zeroed to 100, which surprised me. I knew that bullets didn't travel flat but to find that much climb so soon out of the barrel was interesting.

So the 5.45 round does travel relatively flat in comparison..?

After further thought, I am not sure rather my PSL was set on the 1 (100 meter) setting or the "point blank" setting when it was shooting 4" high at 25 yards. I had a former military friend of mine kind of walking me through it rather than teaching me how to do it on my own.

Damn it..!

Now I have really confused myself. I need to take a class of sorts to learn this from someone who is educated and compitent in ranged and optics shooting.

Anyone know of such a resource, preferably near the DFW (Texas) area..?

Try this

http://www.hornady.com/ballistics/ballistics_calculator.php

it has entry in the calculator that factors in scope height above the bore.

I think the 5.45 ballistic coefficient for most surplus ammo is around
.168

Oooohh very cool..!

Thanks..! :small_gri
