View Thread: 5.45 not seating

This is a new one on me. Just finished a 545 Krink. New unissued kit. Went to load a round and bullet lacks 1/8 entering chamber. Had to drive bolt back with a leather mallet to extract round. Wolf ammo has a shiny ring around case where it stopped. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, jack

The chamber end of the barrel may have been damaged pressing out the barrel and causing the cartridge to get stuck.

Sounds like a small diameter chamber or that round was too fat. Usually when
a round won't chamber from a diameter problem they stop the bolt dead. Very
hard to open and impossible to ram the bolt home. Almost like a solid block of
iron stopped it.

Make sure it's not a 5.56 barrel.

If you are unable to fit a round in how do you know if the headspacing is correct? if you headspaced it did your no go gauges work? or did you experience the same problem?

The small diameter chamber sounds logical. The barrel was very easy to press out,No Damage.I know Troy Sellars at inrange and he said it might be a 223. I tried a 223 shell and it sticks out about a 1/4" where the 5.45 is out about an 1/8" Like I told him I have built a ton of 7.62s and my own personal Krink is 7.62 but this is my first time with 5.45. I measured the shell with dial caliper and its .390 with a 2.244 length. Ive ran solvent and wire brush in and out the chamber numerous times and still no good. I tried to post a picture of the cartridge but not having much luck. Whats the verdict for small Dia. chamber? Press the barrel back out and ream to specs? Thanks, Jack

This doesnt have anything to do with H-Spacing. The round will not seat in the chamber at all with the internals laying on the bench. Its not a matter of lock up or bolt closing, The round will not seat in the chamber. Thanks, Jack

Do a chamber cast and find out for sure what is happening

The round should stick out of the chamber close to 1/8 inch.

The bolt should stop a couple hundredths of an inch from the barrel. With the round positioned in the bolt (bolt out of bolt carrier), see how far the bolt goes before stopping.

It is possible you may have a different problem altogether. Are you sure the bolt carrier was in the receiver properly?

Measure the bore diamete if it is infact a 5.45 the bore diameter is .217 (plus or minus .001), and the groove diameter is .222 (plus or minus .001). If this is not it then the 5.56mm is .219 and your headspacing is way off.

Mr. Allesennogwat, It seems you were correct! I was putting my telescoping guage in there so I could get a Dia. measurment and noticed it kept catching on something and just where the outside of the chamber starts to raise there was a "tiny Tiny" burr where Im sure the brass rod had slipped when I was pushing out the barrel. I managed to get a gunsmith file in there and wear it down. After about 30 minutes with a drill and long brass rod with scotchbrite and honing oil she now locks up tight as a drum! Thanks all for your help, If you guys ever need any Browning 1919A4 help give me a yell and Ill try to return the favor. Browning business got slow so I took on this Krink. If I ever get it done Im going to wait on A4 business to pick up or go find a damn job! Thanks Again Jack

Could the barrel be short chambered and ment to be reamed once its in the trunion? A lot of comercial barrels are advertized as being short chambered to allow for head spaceing once they are seated.
