View Thread: Barrel Removal
AKBuilder
Okay guys how would YOU go about removing a barrel from a receiver that has both trunnions intact and you want to keep the receiver but change out the barrels? ie; too short barrel to legal length..thanks, ElDee :huh_small

What kind of rifle?
Assuming a Romy, I'd press out/drive out the barrel pin, remove the bolt carrier, FCG and use a rod, long bolt or socket extension to reach through the length of the receiver and press/knock the barrel out. You do need copper or brass against the breach to protect it. Some guys use a stack of real copper pennies. Others will use a large brass nut.

"This is designed to be used in conjunction with the AK-Builder Barrel Press Kit to remove barrels in any 7.62x39, 5.45x39, or 5.56x45 AK receiver with both trunnions installed, and it is also useful for adjusting headspace. The tool has a supporting bar welded to the main shaft and relief cuts to provide clearance for the rear trunnion and ejector. Black oxide finish. Brass nut and jam nut not included (included in AK-Builder Barrel Press Kit)."

CAREFULLY drill out the rivets that hold in the front trunion and remove it. Press out the barrel after removing the barrel pin. Replace the front trunion and rerivet it in place.
Install the new barrel and pin it in place with the barrel pin. Think like a manufacturer and it all falls in place.
IF you can't do these steps, get a little help from someone who can.
If this is not your way of thinking, then go with the last post and pay the price!

I have removed barrels by simply taking a long piece of steel round bar and then shaping the front end so it will fit in there and then whack it with a bfh. Make sure the front trunion is supported well and put some tape around parts you don't want scratched. I used a quarter (since bigger than a penny) to protect the chamber. Put in the bar at an angle but as straight as possible. Worked for me but it depends on how tight that barrel is in there.

lotta others ways to do it... but i figured out a way that works well for me. here's how:
remove the stock, buy a 6/3/8" thickie bolt at home depot etc... protect the breech area)brass nut, coins etc..), then just use the 2 long side bars on your bbl press kit you use to back front trunnion. now back up trunion with the bars, now just align the bolt above the lower rails and push out the bbl. oops, make sure you remove the cross pin before all of this. it takes a few tries as ya gotta get it to line up correctly.fyi - i got a bbl out in 2 mins this way-just 3 weeks ago using my method. good luck.
note: i did this all off a shop press.
make sure the stock is removed before you attempt this removal and watch and make sure ur reciever has clearance between ur press.

Jeez Louise you all are really inovative, thank you, thank you one and all..My friend is building 6 guns from kits and wants all matching so some we have to drive barrels out while leaving the rear trunnion safe...you all have really been a big help...if anyone else has a solution please shoot it in...it is great reading all of them...Thank you, ElDee

I used round stock, and pennies to to protect the chamber. The round stock rests on rear trunnion (buffered by some cloth) and is held in place by a chain wrench. Worked fine for me.

Depends on what you have as hardware. I actually have a 12 ton press and I took a steel bar round and 2 pennies. put the pennies in the barrel trunnion recess on the barrel and used the round steel bar as the tool between the pennies and the press RAM (1"). secured the trunnion on the hardened steel plates and it came out with little fuss.
