View Thread: Finish for SIG 226
mmckown
I am picking up a used SIG 226 tomorrow. Hate 9mm, but carried one of these in Panama and in Sand Box I. Gonna be more a momento than daily carry. The weapon has seen better days cosmetically speaking, no rust, but the frame has had a lot of the factory finish worn off the front strap. Bore is sharp and shiny, slide to frame is pretty tight, lock up is good. I think $350 with two hicaps is not a bad price.
Local guy does a heck of a "Melt" job on them and has a pretty extensive computer controlled laser engraving set up. Gonna have a qual pin engraved on one side and SEAL IV Team put on the other side. He does a some really nice engraving on the barrel crowns too. Gonna have him put "Mal Ad Osteo" there.
Am wondering what type of finish to have him use. Nothing flashy, as I do intend to occassionally carry the thing. I like the finish on Glocks (tenifer?) but I think it is proprietery. What comes close to this for duribility?

Just finished reading a book about Seal Team IV, good read!

The Glock "finish" is actually parkerizing, the TENIFER is a case-hardening process applied to the steel underneath. The technical name for the process is ferritic nitrocarburizing. The steel is rendered hard and wear resistant, and the corrosion resistance is upped considerably as well.
GunKote advertises that SEAl teams use it on their weapons, so I would go with that over park.

Yup. Gotta get a PM off to him about a package price. Bought a can of Polish 7.63x25 from him a while back, seems like a nice guy, but there were a lot of problems when he was adverting here. On the MGO board I have never read anything bad about his work. My guess is he overstepped his ability to complete work and got over whelmed. Then again it is one thing to screw up internet work, another to screw up work for guys that are in your face.
He does advert Gunkote...

Got a name for the book for me? Would be interested in it, especially '81-'91 time frame. Always like reading about guys I know. Really enjoyed Marchenko's first book cause when the excrement hit the fan at Six a bunch of his guys from there booked over to Four. Was fun figuring out who he was talking about from nic's and descriptions...

Picked up and checked the date code on my new (to me) West German SIG. JK = 89 production. Pretty beat up finish wise, fility internally (does anyone really tear apart a pistol to clean it any more?) but in excellent shape mechanically. Seems it was a cop gun most of its life, which usually equals lots of carry time and minimal shooting time. Will try to get to the range this wekend for a quick shooting eval...

Chuck Pfarrer Class 114, Seal Team Four then Seal Team Six during the time you indicated. The book he wrote is Warrior Soul, The memoir of a Navy Seal.
