View Thread: Chrome lined gas tubes?
Deek57
Just a crazy idea I had when I was bored at work... I heard the svd's have a chrome lined gas tube and thought it would be a great idea to make them for everything else too. Does anybody make these for ak's and psl's to protect against corrosion?

Can't one just get it coated in chrome?

Not a crazy idea, although probably not necessary and redundant.

probably be easier to have them made out of stainless tubing.

If you are shooting Bulgy 5.45X39 corrosive milsurp it would be a great idea. First time I shoot my AK74 with it, I cleaned out the gas tube with WD40. When I checked it about a week later it had started to corrode, the ammo was that corrosive! After that I sprayed more WD40 into the gas tube after cleaning and left it, this stopped the corroding.

That's one reason I'm staying away from the 74...thoroughly cleaning a semi-auto after every shoot would get annoying.

Your problem is you did not use soapy water. WD40 will not disolve the corrosive salts.

peroxide works.

Four problems here.
1. You assumed that Bulgy ammo was non corrosive. Always assume that surplus foreign ammo is corrosive. Wolf is the exception.
2. You used WD40. WD=water displacing. WD40 will not stop the corrosion. You might want to check it again. Throw the crap away and get some decent oil. I highy recommened CorrosionX.
3. You did not properly clean the gun after you shot the ammo.
Spraying some kind of liquid in the gun is NOT cleaning it. Proper cleaning takes a little elbow grease.
4. Chrome lining is WAY over rated.
