View Thread: Mosin storage and Gunzilla
HCRoadie
I have several Mosin Nagants and a Romak III. I've been using Gunzilla on the bolts, actions, and in the pipes for long term, three weeks or more, storage. This Gunzilla stuff is strange. After a few weeks it turns a rusty brown. The first time I took a gun out after about a month of being "preserved" in this swill, I thought the gun was toast. It looked like the whole action and bolt were in a rusty soup. After wiping off a few parts I did not find any rust, but the solvent did increase in viscosity, and turned from almost clear to a watered down cola color. The gun, as it turns out is fine. Gunzilla cleans as well as Hoppes 9 does. What do you guys and gals use for semi long or long term storage of these older weapons? Also, How has Gunzzila treated you? Thanks in advance

3 weeks isn't long term storage, 3 decades is. I have some guns that I have had stored since the late-1980's. I have cosmoline that I bought milsurp and it is the generally accepted solution for long-term (years of) undisturbed storage. Heat it up and brush it on with a paint-brush or smear it on with gloved hands. If you plan to really store them for years take the wood off and completely coat all metal surfaces. Any surface you treat with it will look like it does now in a century provided that you don't store them in water.
You can also get cosmoline impregnated wax paper to wrap them once you have preserved them. Just remember that the guns you are discussing are chambered for 7.62x54r, many of these cartridges are very very old and almost all very corrosive so you will need to thoroughly clean the bore with soap and water then dry and oil before you preserve/store.

Thanks jennymikeb for the advise on looooong term storage. I thoroughly clean for corrosive ammo after every shooting session (with hot water, dry, then clean with solvents-brush-patch, THEN use the Gunzilla).

After you have shot and cleaned your firearm, always wipe out the bore, chamber and bolt after three days. The metal absorbs some of the cleaning solvent/ammo residue and sweats it out especially in the bore, chamber and bolt face. This residue stays on the surface of the metal attracting mositure causing corrosion/piting.

As has been stated you can remove you stocks to really coat the metal but don't make the mistake of not re assembling with stocks on to store, otherwise the stocks will just warp. COSMOLINE. Try Brownel's or your local auto supply store.
