View Thread: How Much to Paint
graywolf
I just got all my spray paints from Brownell for a 47 and a 74 build. My question is how much of the gun do you paint. The receivers are all clean and parkerized, the trigger housings are blued or black paint (the 74) Trunions are a sort of black . Would it look best if all the metal was painted Black, I bought both gloss and Matte, My Hungarian folder came a gloss Black, But my Norinco NM Legend is matte. What is correct for a AMD65 and a Bulgie 74? Regards Graywolf

AMD/Hungarian rifles are a bit shinier matte finish. The Bulgarians are a bit more flat to matte. I use KG GunKote matte on Hungarians and add about 20% flat to the mix for a Bulgy. Try painting the receiver and top cover first and see how it matches. Also depends if you a beadblasting prior to painting.

I went with the matte teflon black over the parker. Came out good. I painted everything but the FCG (G-2) parts, the piston and springs. Paint it with light coats, don't try to cover with first/second pass. Dry with a old hair dryer in between coats. Third coat was the finishing coat. Baked with old heat lamps. Good luck and post some pictures when you get it done.

it works just using spray paint to refinish a Ak?
Ill do it with mine if it worked for you maybe

You are not going to have as much leeway with rattle-can - too thick. I recommend masking off anything that would be internal on an assembled gun. The AK is loose enougth you can probably do the bolt carrier, but leave the trigger group and bolt. the bulgys did the bolt but it comes right off.
I do everything satin - pretty generic, but with spray equipment I can change its sheen slightly, which you can't very well in a rattle can.
