View Thread: Hungarian Wood Question looking for advice!

RaccoonRough
Okay, Help me out some guys. :small_gri

I have posted two pictures. The first picture is of a solid wood romy stock that I bought to strip and make it into a rear stock for my AKM63 build. The picture is of the stock before I stripped the varnish off from it.

The second picture shows two different sets of Hungy handles that I have and the Romy stock after I have stripped it. You can see how the color of my two hungy handles differ and how it compares to the romy stripped stock. The one set of handles are a brownish color instead of yellow. Is this due to age or use? Or did some of the hungarian handles get stained brown in color?

I like the more blonde handles but it appears that the stock somewhat already matches the other set of handles. What should I do??

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can either match the stock to the two blonde handles or should I use the two handles that match it.

Are the darker handles I have the wrong color for a Hungarian AKM63? Should the stock set be the blonde color? I need some advice.

Thanks
RR

The pictures.

Still looking for anyone with advice or experience on how to make this romy stripped stock work for me on my AKM63 clone.

Thanks

The buttstock and the Hungarian grips on the left have been stained in some non-original stain color. Strip them and perhaps light sanding if necessatry to get them more into the blonde/amber range. Amber Shellac in light coats or cut with clear can give the right tone. The stained examples are not close to Hungarian at all.
The ones on the right are correct.

What about bleaching the wooden butt stock?
I have heard of bleaching but not sure if that is what I should do.

Bleaching can work for dirty or other stains. But those stocks appear to have a stain and./or finish on them. They need to be stripped first IMHO. Unless you have already done that. Household bleach can work OK but do not leave the stocks in water for long and rinse the bleach thoroughly. Water & wood are not a good mix. Oxalic Acid is technically wood bleach. But stripping and very light sanding are you best bet I think.

I have already used a spray on stripper on the wooden rear stock. I can try sanding it a bit. I will try to strip the two darker hungarian handles then.

Should I cut the bleach with water at all?

Just try rubbing/brushing on the bleach and leave it for a few minutes. See if it makes a change. Rinse with water and dry off. Household Chlorine bleach is about 90%-97% water solution so that is my referwence to water.

Okay, thank you so much for taking the time to post me with some help!

I will give it a shot this weekend and see what I end up with. Does anyone know where I can pick up a couple of complete hungarian handles, with all the hardware as well?

Thanks

I am doing the same thing right now, if you get real orange shellac and denatured alchohal and mix it your self you will get better results and control thickness. I will never buy premade shellac again plus for other projects you can use clear, red amber and probably some other colors of shellac flakes. Remember, these are beetle droppings from India so don't eat with your fingers while working with it! :wink_smal

RaccoonRough
So orange shellac is what your using to make a stock match the hungarian yellow handles?
