View Thread: how many guns

how many guns is too many? i have 3 high caps, 3 .22's and 3 hign caps 9mm, my ? is i can only carry one rifle and pistol at a time. do you think this is too many? i often ask my self that ?. but can never get rid of them. i had planned on giving one of each to my 2 sons when they get older (7-10 years)

do i have too many or is holding on to them for the children the right thing to do? remember "what about the children"

KernelKrink
When buying a new (to you anyway) gun interferes with putting food on the table or paying your bills, you have too many. Until that point, you don't have enough. And don't forget ammo. A lifetime supply for each is just enough.

Seriously, guns almost always retain their value if kept in good shape. Inflation is always raising prices. Assuming you got them at a reasonable price instead of during the inflated price "panic buying spree" of the last year they will certainly cost more to replace a few years from now when you think the boys are old enough to own a gun. Especially in this economy and if the Feds manage to pass more "reasonable" gun controls.

Firefly
Hold on to them,...........and +1 on the ammo.

6526
all of them plus 10, and all of the ammo you'll ever need should be just about enough,,,,almost

mak86
holding on to them seem to be the right thing to do. i even got out of the "AR thing" being i didnt trust them with my life. they are great for range and easier to work on, like changing out barrels, uppers, and on. i just always asked my self if all of these were necessary, but i know people with 10 handguns and 15 long guns.
i always keeped 500 rounds per rifle in "reserve" never to be touched for nothing but "just in case" scenarios.

As many as you can afford the safes to put them in. I don't drink, smoke, gamble, or run around; so it's a hobby.

mitchstoner
All of the uses of guns are valid: defense, in case of shtf, hobby, investment.

Do you feel you have "too much" money in your IRA?

Do you worry that you enjoy any of your other hobbies "too much?"

When does capability to defend your family become "too much?"

drjarhead
Hard to have too many.

You can use them to defend your home, hunt, defend liberty.

You can some to your kids and train them.

You may need spares for parts, cache or to hand to others who may help you to defend your family, home, life and liberty.

They are good investments also. Better than anything else you buy that depreciates, anyhow.

XSAPPER
When people ask me how many guns I've got to try to count them in my head, then throw out a number followed by "I think". :)

No such thing... How many airbags are "too many" in a catastrophic crash (you are in)...

God forbid, but if you ever experience a SHTF situation, there is no such thing as too many weapons, or for that matter, too much ammunition.

If you ever (God forbid) experience a SHTF situation with too few weapons and an ammunition shortage, you will understand what I mean.

It is ALWAYS better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Try to get a bunch of guns in the same caliber. easier to stock up on ammo that way.

all in 7.62x39, .22lr, 9mm, except the ccw is glock 27 in .40.

the reason behind this question is that if you had to bug out for any reason, flood, fire, ect. and had to load up the family in a truck, you would take food, clothes, and blankets, but would the average person take all his gun collection? i would try, but when you got to take food, and clothes, tent (if you dont have a bumper pull trailer) for a family of 4. that dont leave much room for anything. i would take all the ammo and mags for sure.

This is me also. If you like guns, you never have enough. I think it is time to buy another safe though. :D

let see, I have hunting rifles, hunting shotguns, tactical shotguns, muzzle loaders, handguns, SHTF guns, plinkers, and a couple longrange varmit types...still need a few more, gotta get around to building my FAL too...still not enough. And as far as ammo goes if the place catches fire tell the fire crew "better stay back boys till she cooks off, better yet, get low in the ditch, keep your damn heads down."

TD, I don't understand why you're collecting all those empty cans and crates in
the first photo? :rofl_smal :rofl_smal

LOL I did a doubletake on the second photo. That looks A LOT like my ammo pile. My safe is to the left... and a black toolbox is to the right LOL

I'm not sure there's a "right" answer to the OP's question, but I think there are some guidelines that can inform the situation:

1. If you don't have enough money to pay your bills and to also save a little bit, then you probably shouldn't be buying anything other than the "bare bones" as far as guns go (I define "bare bones" as a handgun or two, a .22 rifle, an intermediate caliber carbine "assault rifle", a battle rifle, and a shotgun). I'm always amazed when I see people who buy a new gun, and then in another thread turn around and claim they're broke, and don't know how they're going to pay for their broken-down car or something. That's called "stupidity".

2. I know guys who have 50+ guns. Some are simply collectors. But others do it because they think they're preparing for SHTF. I don't understand that, because most people I know can only shoot one gun at a time. And yeah, it might be nice to have some guns for friends, but if the SHTF, 50 guns is probably gonna be overkill. And if you have to bug-out, you're likely not going to be taking 50 guns with you anywhere.

3. You should always have enough ammo stored for long-term use. By "enough", I mean a couple thousand rounds. Now, I know some people who think you don't have "enough" until you have 20,000+ rounds stored. While this is fine if a person can reasonably afford it, I think it's a little excessive. Because if you ever need to bug-out, you likely ain't taking 20,000 rounds with you. And seriously...if things are ever so bad that you desperately NEED more than a couple thousand rounds, then you might as well put one of those rounds right through your head, because at that point things will probably be untolerably bad.

Basically, a lot of guys go overboard. Again, if you can afford it, more power to you. Hell, if you want 100 guns and you can buy those AND still save money, then good for you. Enjoy! But I see a lot of broke-ass guys spending every dime they make on guns or gun stuff when they aren't saving jack-shit, and I marvel at the financial stupidity inherent in doing so. Unfortunately, many Americans are REALLY bad with their money. Which is why their asses are broke all the time.

I's say that if you can't pay your bills AND save at least 10% of your income, and you have more than the basics, then at that point you have too many guns.

Stevie, I hear what you are saying, but I will disagree with you on one point. I see the guy with the 100 guns as having an investment, over and above what his shooting/self-defense/SHTF needs may be. And frankly, with the way monetary policy has been mismanaged in this country and the potential for hyperinflation and/or a collapse of the US Dollar, the guns may well be a BETTER secure investment than money in the bank. Not as liquid, granted, but also able to hold value as well or better than gold in an economic crisis, and IF the economy recovers, the demand on guns will still be there, so long as you buy low and sell high (just like stocks, gold, etc.)

bill3542
I already live in a rural area so no need for bugging out. personally i consider 3 AKs and 4 FALs a good start for family members. this doesn't include deer rifles, shotguns,.22s, assorted pistols, and revolvers.
I've been collecting ( toys ) and the ammo to go with them for over 30 years.

ddavefl
I`ve got 10 nephews, all in their 20`s so I`ll need more AK`s and ammo if SHTF :skull_cro

Tommo
George Washington owned fifty guns and Thomas Jefferson two dozen, sounds about right to me.

too much is just enough

tdbrown1969
I must not have had enough.....I picked up 2(Walther P22 & Savage .22) yesterday and 1(Taurus M85UL 38SPCL) today

cpt ron
i have a very nice large collection of guns that i will keep.
i also have many that are going to be used for trading for supplies if that time comes. i also have enough ammo to trade with them. most if the trading rifles are mosin nagants rifle. i got the rifles and the ammo cheap. very cheap.

merdenoms
everyones talking about having enough guns for family members Frankly, I don't trust just giving a gun to a family member or friend. If they don't already own it themselves, that probably means they don't know much about it. I've seen wayyyy to many people mishandle guns. If your worried that your family members might need guns, talk them into purchasing their own gun.

Yea....... my OLDER brother blew a hole in his wall w the 12 ga I got him.....luckily he missed the dog (I love that thing)

He's a pretty good shot at the range....... he follows instruction well.... but I guess leavin him alone w a firearm was a mistake.

KernelKrink
Tell me about it. My brother killed a bathroom vanity twice with the same gun. For some reason he thinks a 1911 should be carried hammer down at half cock over a live round and like to fiddle with it while on the throne.

How many guns? Always one......................................................................more.

Of course that means George could only get 50 rnds off and Tom 24 before they would have to spend about 1-1.5hrs reloading :)

How many guns.............You can never have enough, keep buying til you run out of money.
