View Thread: Home made hollow points..?

Can't get my hands on 5.45x39 hollow points right now but I have plenty of FMJ.

I was thinking about snipping, cutting or using a grinder to nip the tip off of a few of my Russian surplus rounds and make "hollow points" so I can go to the damn range and sight in a new scope. I can't find a range around the DFW area that will allow FMJ.

Has anyone tried this or know if it will work, or will it throw off the bullet's balance so much as to make it useless for sighting in a scope..? Or perhaps someone knows of a rifle range around DFW that allows FMJ and I can avoid having to do this all together..?

i was told by my uncle that when they could they would grind the tips off the bullets for their garands they called them dum-dums.he said before they did that when they shot the jerrys they'd take off running.

bart
im pretty sure it would spoil the accuracy of the 5.45 round.

Consistency would be the problem, any angle off dead flat or difference in height would make each bullet a little different from the next. Different weights and off-balance projectiles do not contribute to good accuracy. Deburring would also likely be needed. A mill and a jig would be the solution to repeatability.

The 5.45x39 bullets have a hollow nose which deforms on impact and makes the bullet yaw and causes more damage. Remember how the Afghans called it a poison bullet? That is because the bullet could enter their leg and come out of their mid section.

This is why you don't need to do anything to the bullet, it's already effective.

Years ago they used to sell a "universal hollowpoint tool" in Midway's reloading catalog for making FMJ pistol ammo into hollow points. It was similar to this one

5.45 is close to .22, possibly this tool could be modified to work.

FMJ bullets have their jacket end at the rear rather than the front like HPs. I have read that if you cut the tips off, the jacket can seperate and remain in the barrel, with obvious consequences.

I wonder if a Meplat Trimmer would be enough just to take the jacket off...should do a uniform job too.

I know they are designed for uniforming existing match hollow points but it might work?

If your lucky you may be able to find some of this ammo, Barnaul's 5.45x39 Lacquer Coated Steel Case 55gr Soft Point ammunition.
Copes had it not long ago, give them a call and they may be able to dig some up.

Nice score, thanks..! :small_gri
