View Thread: Proper Rivet Kit?

DE44Magna
Tittle says it all. I'm looking for a rivet kit and a barrel pin to assemble my PSL kit. Anyone know where? A bolt hold open would be nice too. Any ideas?

DE44Magna
Bueler? Bueler?

I believe a Yugo RPK kit would work, and a standard ak barrel pin should work also.

DE44Magna
That's what I though but when I did a forum search for "rivet" and "barrel pin" and I came up with nothing useful. Thanks for the confirmation on which rivet kit to use. Any recommended sources? Any info for the bolt hold open?

KEVAKOV
Second here on the Yugo rivet set, I use the Yugo M70 fixed stock rivet set. For the barrel pin I order them from Cope's Dist. Cant wait to get started on another PSL build!

LESchwartz
The PSL rear trunnion requires longer rivets due to the added width of the reinforcement plates.

I found the cope's barrel pin but I still cannot find a yugo rivet kit. Any sources?

Try Low_Lead: http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34415. Last I checked, he didn't have any PSL length rear trunnion rivets . . . but you should double-check when you PM him.

I'm about to start on another batch of PSL kits . . . I spin my own rear rivets. If I don't have any in my stash, I'll have to make some more. If I do, I'll make up a few extra for you . . . lotta if's there, so no promises on availability or timing . . .

cool, thanks for the help. I'll send Low_Lead a PM and please do shoot me one if you make another set of rivets.

AK Karl
Here is a source of Yugo rivet sets.

Thanks guys, rivets ordered.

Who did you end up ordering from? Did they have the proper PSL rear rivets?

I need a set of rear rivets for a PSL build also. The regular rear trunnion rivets do look just a bit short for a PSL build, has anyone tried them?

Hopefully, DE44Magna will check back in once he received his rivets and let us know if his supplier provided the correct length rivets . . .

I received my rivets yesterday, the rear Yugo rivets are too short, they just come to the end of the second rear reinforcement plate. Looks like I'm going to have to go custom at least for the rear 2.

DE44Magna
I ordered them from AK Karl's source. NG for the rear trunnion rivets.

Any ideas for longer ones? Any sources?

Since 4.5 mm doesn't seem to be available, here are some options:

1) 4.5 mm is 0.177" and 3/16" is 0.188", you should be able to ream both the trunnion and the receiver holes and use the bigger rivet. I'm told this used to be SOP for some builders. I purchased some 3/16" online. RJ Leahy (http://www.rjleahy.com/Store/rivets/trvr.htm) has 3/16" x 2" listed on their web site. Longer than required, but easy to shorten.

2) Purchase 3/16" rivets and turn them down to 4.5. This is tedious and requires access to a lathe.

3) Purchase 5/32" rivets and use footlongcuban's method for shimming the hole (http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48370). Here's a link to Centaur-Forge 5/32" x 1-3/4" rivets (http://www.centaurforge.com/Steel-Rivets/products/223/).

Looks like the RJ Leahy site has something I can use. The holes in the rear trunnion are 0.196" so the 3/16"x2" rivets should work, the total thickness of the rear trunnion, support plates and the receiver comes to 1.750" so I think the 2" rivets would be perfect.

All six of my PSL rear trunnions all used 4.5mm rivets . . . looks like you're good to go.

I received my 3/16"x2.5" rivets today, they fit (rather snugly I might add) through the rear trunnion. I just don't know what to do with the other 44 now. Thanks for all the input guys.

KEVAKOV
Just got a box of the 3/16 X 2 inch rivets from RJ Leahy also, and they fit great. I will have to drill out the rear trunnion with a 3/16 drill bit. Will post a pic soon.

KEVAKOV
These will need to cut down with a Dremel cutoff wheel also. http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii110/KEVAKOV/100_0990.jpg

I prep'ed my two latest PSL kits, and found that both used 3/16" rivets. Both kits are the "newer style" with the nuetered bayonet lug and pin-on muzzle break. The rear trunnion holes looked "factory".

Based in these results, I don't see why drilling the rear trunnion for 3/16" rivets couldn't now be the standard build method for PSL kits with 4.5mm rear trunnions.

I have always used McMaster-Carr supplied rivets for my AK builds; it seems that I will be going back there for the longer 3/16" x 2" ones also! Drilling out the rear trunions from 4.5 mm to 3/16" has been SOP for years for my needs.
