Hi. I would like to get the opinions of those who have had the opportunity to use the Colorado Shooting Sports Lightning Bolt. Looking for the thoughts of those with real life experience.

Simply, if you've used it, what did you think of it?

Thanks in advance. :D

A solution in search of a problem.

I have 2... one on a Romy and one on my Norinco...

Construction and durability are excellent... ABSOLUTELY no issues with dirt or debris getting into action from unused right side cover slot... Actually on my 2nd one I opted for addition of left side charging handle and kept the original..

The advantage is for those of us ingrained with left hand "charging" (from M4 manuel of arms)... it keeps the same reflex action for charging

It is a quality item and helpful for those who shoot a lot and must carry different rifles.. Not for everyone... Not for the AK purest

Disadvantage... obviously this routine wont work for a "pickup" AK..
(but I have no intentions of losing mine...)

Thanks for the link. I should have included it.

That's a valid opinion, LuzRD, and probably the most valid criticism. It's expensive and one would likely be further ahead if that money were put towards more ammo and/or a carbine class.

HA! I knew you'd say that. ;)

With respect for the fact that you'd probably forgotten more about the AK than I'll ever know, I disagree. Reaching over/under is not ideal. It's definitely doable. In fact, with training it can be done very quickly. While I wouldn't classify the right hand charging handle as "broken" or in need of a solution, that isn't the same as saying a good design couldn't be slightly improved ergonomically.

Thanks so much, AllynNorman. Glad to hear that you have actual time with them.

Sounds like you have a gen I and a gen II, is that correct? To bother you with another question, do you have a preference for either?

i charge with my right hand

And why not? Seriously. I probably will charge with my right hand almost all the time because the bad guys with whom I do battle are made of cardboard. Realistically, (and hopefully) I'll never need to do more than just have fun and shoot for recreation.

:D

Thanks for your replies, all!

For me (right handed) the charging handle flying back toward the face would be distracting. I guess you would get used to it after a while...

Plenty of those in the gun world.

I guess they have to come up with some way to fleece us of our money and people will pay a far greater markup on accessories and bling than they will on the actual guns. Go figure.

I rotate the rifle over with my right forearm on the right side of the buttstock, supporting the weight of the rifle, rack with my left hand. Same with the selector lever. Very fast at that, very natural.

With an underfolder that is not much of an option. I go with the right hand.

All of my rifles, except one, are stock. I just don't get the attraction for all the crap people have to add in order to convince themselves they are now 'tactical'.

They'd be far better off to just practice, shoot and train. Far, far better off.

I suppose that if I were coming up with the next best POS to hang on a gun for $500 I might feel differently about it. LOL.

I would say it's actually a better design than the oh-so-ergonomic AR "punch yourself in the face" charging handle, and that's coming from someone who grew up shooting ARs. Being different, and not what you're used to, doesn't make it "less than optimal".

If you run the AK like an AK, as opposed to trying to run it like an "unergonomic" AR, you'll begin to understand the "why" of the design features a lot better.

I'm not some angry old codger who thinks you can't improve upon the rifle's design. In fact, it can be improved, or at least enhanced! For instance, I loathe the original Russian side rail scope mounts. I feel that using an Ultimak with a co-witnessed sight (Aimpoint) is a much better solution. Same goes for the rear sight. Open that notch up just a hair, dehorn it, and you've made a serious improvement to the original design. Even better, you didn't spend a small fortune for it either.

That's my take. My list for basic improvements on an AK is fairly short:

Trigger plate
Trigger (G2 or RSA)
larger pistol grip
Open up the rear sight notch and dehorn the sight
Flash hider

If you want to get fancy:
Ultimak w/Aimpoint (co-witnessed)

too used to bolt-guns.

right hand drops the mag, snaps a new one in with left hand on foregrip, rack it with my right and flip off the safety.
