View Thread: Reloading possible for the PRT 91, HK91 clone?

The PTR 91 has a fluted chamber, similar to the name sake HK-91. How would this affect reloading? How safe and reliable are these retarded blow-back actions?

I've done it. Some versions of G3's don't flute the cases as badly as others. For auto rifles I usually load new cases though. The G3 action is pretty safe. It is designed for certain weight bullets. The rifling is pretty slow anyway so need for heavy bullets.

Some good info here.

What is the rifling twist rate on the PTR 91? Also I have been handloading for my Saiga AK-47 .308 Winchester (7.62 x 51) and found that 150gr bullets seem to really group pretty nice. It has a 1:12 twist rate. Actually it is a 1 in 320mm twist rate, which translates to 1 in 12.598 " but close enough.

I use CCI #250 Magnum primers throught all my powders. The magnum primers are needed for ball (spherical) powders, and I just watch pressures for the extruded powders I have. Anyone else use magnum primers with success?

The international standard is right around one turn in 12 inches. The American rifles are usually the only ones using one turn in 10 inches and some newer target rifles use one turn in 11 inches. My H&K manuals have it listed but it isn't much different everybody else that uses one turn in 12 inches. The recoil operated system in H&K is bullet weight tuned anyway so there isn't much point in trying heavy weight bullets.

Ah, so there is specific bullet weights that must be used regardless of the accuracy vs weight grain of bullet. With my Saiga .308, I can shoot all the way down to 110 gr bullets and I have in reloading, and I have shot all the way up to 180 gr Winchester Power Point (factory). But, my rifle seems to like the 130-150 gr best, and I think it like the flat base over the boat tails. Something to consider if I ever thought of selling my .308 Saiga to get the PRT-91, as to bullet size I could use for reloading, and the actual reloading itself. I would suspect that because of the fluting, you might be limited to less than you would normally get (reloads) from some other normal chamber rifle.

Chamber fluting definatley shortens case life.
