View Thread: K-Var has Russian AK-74 less $$$ option now

I just noticed that K-Var is now selling a (semi-auto) original configuration SGL31-61 (Saiga) Russian produced AK-74 for $799 which is US compliant (FCG & Furniture for 922R, maybe US muzzle brake or gas piston they don't say).

what's the difference between this one and the one that comes with the 30-round mag (besides the mag)?

By my math, the difference is about $300-400...sorry, couldn't resist. :D Other than that, I have no idea, you'd want to call and ask them. The $799 Saiga model looks decent to me from the specs. A 30 round mag will only set you back $15-25 depending on whether you want poly or steel.

10rnd mag? Is it only a single stack? Would explain the cheaper price.

No, it accepts normal mags. The price is at this point because it's simply a conversion of a $349 Saiga.

They both take 30-rounders, and share the same Saiga barrel / receiver, right?
Is the more expensive model not a converted Saiga as well?

I would note that the previous SGL31-44 model now shows "out of stock". I'd be very surprised if they ever come back into stock at K-Var. I think the SGL31-61 is a replacement (more or less the same thing at a much more competitive price).
I'd bet they sold all the $1K+ AK-74's they felt the market would bear, and now they've come back with something in a price range to be competitive with other AK-74 offerings. That's just my take/guess on it.

These new "cheapies" are normal sporter Saigas that have been konverted by K-var.
They are not Legion imports, just more 'slight of hand' from K-var.

A friend just ordered one of the 'cheap' russian SGL31-61. They told him the difference was the 10rd mag, non-chrome lined brake and plain box. We will see when it comes in.
I expect part of the price difference may be the exchange rate.

not sure where you got that info. i spoke with k-var and then arsenal this morning to get to the meat on this story.
the gun is marked identical. it has the military proofs and the legion markings on the side. the same amount of work was done by legion in russia. the differences are the brake, the mag, and the box. unless i got bold faced lied to the guns are basically the same.

I have the same questions as some have already asked. It's a killer price if they are Russian, but K-var's own ad leaves questions like,...what are non-critical parts?...if it's a Genuine Russian, what ain't Russian?

Did K-var really tell that guy the milled receiver on the Arsenal M-7 was made in the U.S.A., or was the caller mistaken and got confused?

Not only did they tell him that, they told him the milled underfolding stock was made in the USA the first time he called. . .
