View Thread: Bad Black Talon...
NewKrink
So I bought a new Glock .45. loaded it with some Black Talon ammo. Went to test it for function and "tick"...nothing happened. Cycled the slide, pulled the round and there was a dent in the primer. The bullet was a dud! Went to the next one and it worked fine. I'm not sure how old this ammo is, I'm sure it's pretty old as it was in the original Black talon box..not Ranger SXT. But, I emptied the magazine and replaced it with Corbon +P's. Anybody have any speculation?

It could just be a bad primer made it's way into the system, did a second strike set it off?

No,...I tried.

pull the barrel and see if the dud round drops in and seats with a click, or see if it binds from a small chamber. a small chamber (relative to the cartridge) will cause an out-of-battery light or no strike.

Was this ammo that you bought from a reputable dealer, or did you get it at a gunshow or from a personal sale? The Talon stuff has not been on the open market as fresh ammo for quite a while
I am wondering how it may have been stored. If it was mis stored and had one primer go bad. I would be suspect of the whole box.
But thats just me

I was suspect of the whole box. That's why I unloaded the mag and reloaded with some Corbon's. It was a reputable dealer, and the next round did function. But I think it must have been atleast 15 years old, as I remember the original boxes being on the market then. Probably just an old primer. But enough of an issue that I set the rest of the box on the back burner.

Squibs and duds happen, even from the top manufacturers. I have family who teach firearms training and go through tens of thousands of rounds of brand name ammo on regular basis, mainly winchester sxt's and winclean. I've been told the occassional squib or dud is not uncommon when dealing with large quantities of ammo, regardless of the fact the ammunition is brand new. I saw with my own two eyes, a .40 cal round of winclean that had the primer installed sideways. I'd bet the black talon in question just had a bad primer. When you make millions upon millions of rounds a year, they cant all be right 100% of the time.

Do you know the date your 45 ACP Glock was made? I know it was sold as a "new" one. Make sure there is no oil in the firing pin / striker channel. The early large frame 45 / 10mm Glocks suffered from light strikes. The trigger was suppose to be replaced for one with a longer stroke of the striker.
