View Thread: No more 5.45 being brought in country?
warhound
I was talking to a guy yesterday at the range, he claimed to be an FFL, and said that he heard from his supplier that no more surplus 5.45 is being brought in country because it's steel core and 5.45x39 pistols are on the market.
Can anybody confirm or deny this? I can't find anything on google about it.

Old rumor, long debunked. You're about 4-5 years too late.
Essentially, fed law bans certain "armor piercing ammunition" based on metal content of the bullet, among other things. The surplus 5.45 ammo coming in has a steel core but it also has lead in it, which does not make it AP under the law. Legal handgun ammo.
Way back in the day, Chinese steel core ammo in 7.62X39, which has no lead and is a solid steel bullet plated/jacketed in copper, was banned from import because Olympic Arms advertised the availability of an AR15 style pistol in that caliber. No lead in it, so it did meet the metal content definition of AP and it is now history.
People were assuming, based on the Chinese steel core ban, that all steel core was the same, it isn't.

Explain........ Hundreds of Millions of Russian, Czech, Bulgarian, Hungarian, and Polish "7.62x54" (7.62x54R?) rounds with Steel core have been imported and continue to come on in...... and not by "accident". It is still allowed.
Did you mean 7.62xTHIRTY NINE?

Steel core rifle ammunition is alright for import. I think you mean armor piercing ammunition slipped in with the standard rifle ammunition. Armor piercing and tracer ammunition is restricted for import but like Chinese ammunition it does slip in to shipments once in a while. Sometimes some steel core 7.62x39 does get mixed in shipments too.
