View Thread: How many people use gun ranges?

rainbow6
I just wondered how many people go and use a gun range at a designated place or do you have enough land around where you live to casually shoot?

knall
land.

Shoot at my parents property.td

Fortis
Depends, handguns I can use my brothers property but it`s pretty hilly so for rifle it`s off to the local range about 5 miles away. Only thing is the range master is Grandpa Simpson, only grouchier w/ more hearing loss.

My son ( a Sgt in the USMC ) and I went to shoot (AR15`s)at our local Range. The range master would not let him shoot because he was wearing a white t-shirt. Even after showing his Military ID. I said to the guy your kidding right ? No he was not. A public range that would not let a US Marine shoot because he had a white T-shirt on :(
I have never gone back

Public ranges aren't bad in NEPA. The one that I prefer the most has a 6 200 yard rifle benches, 10 100 yd benches, 4 50 yd benches, a handgun section, and a section for trap and skeet.

Same for western Pa. Local range run by the State Game Commision is only 10 minutes away, free to use,but tough rules. Nice range in nearby Beaver,Pa has 200 yard backstop with hanging iron plates on one side, and a plinking area where you can shoot at bowling pins, etc.,and an indoor range members can use 24hrs.
Friend of mine grandparents had a farm 40 miles away,we used to shoot targets along walking trail and at old cars, but he moved away.:sad_small

skeeterbay
I took the backhoe & dozer and built a small range at my camp. Nothing special one shooting lane with a max distance of 175 yards. Works good for hunters using my camp that want to check zero. However now I want more distance. So I am making a new one on the edge of one of my farm fields.

Skeeter!

Lysander
Both, depends on how far I feel like driving.

i have 2 ranges here in florida.one is outdoor and $5 for the day.it has a bunch of lanes with a pistol,50 yard and 100 yard sections.its slow fire only, but i'm getting used to it.i burn waaay less ammo now.then there is a pistol caliber only indoor range, but i haven't made it there yet.

KernelKrink
I have around 13 acres at home, so mostly it's just open the back door and blast away. We also have a pretty good outdoor range nearby, I am too cheap to buy a membership but I have plenty of friends I can go with.

veprk5.45
Here in yuma arizona we have a fantastic range thats free. We got shotgun, blackpowder, bow,a silhouette range with targets from 50 to 650 meters and a thousand yard range for the sneaky type. Also got a bunch of little 50 to 100 meter ranges for pistol but its used mostly by leo and border patrol.Every now and then you can hear swat lettin out some rips from there auto mp5's.

The only bad thing is since its not a monitored range you get alot of idiots walking down range without calling it cold,or basically doing all the shit you shouldnt.

I couldnt ask for a better setup, and its free.

ruckstar
To shoot rifles I just go to a friend's house. For pistols I go to an indoor range that a friend of mine runs.

44rdv4rk
little backyard range with 30/50/80 yd "plinking stations"

local r&g club for 100/200 yd.

XSAPPER
Behind the house is the in laws hay field I have a backstop at 100 yards.

bart
we use to shoot a few spots in sand pits and by the river out of town in so.MN.but after 9-11 we got booted every time people were freakin out calling the cops claiming there were terrorists in the area.everything is posted around here now.i shoot at home here ive got a 150 yd.range out back.near 100.00 a year to belong to local ranges(25-60 miles away).i just stick around home these days.

WTF does that even mean? what about black t-shirts, or blue jeans?

WTF?

Fortis
^That threw me for a loop too, never heard of that one.

abrzwok
Both. I don't have land, but my father does.

Teppo
Probably referring to gangsters, some of them in my area does wear white T-shirt.

I have a yearly membership to a local gunclub that is right up the street from my residence,(2 blocks away) that I can shoot pistol and rimfire rifle,....or anything that is under 1500 ft.per sec. (city ordinance) The only downfall to this set-up is the longest distance for targets is 30yrds. For my AK's,... AR's,....and high power rifles, Shot-guns,.... I go to a State gamelands,...which is about a 12 mile drive from my residence. This set-up,... I have: 25/50/100/200/yrd. capabilities......T.C. Ken in Pa.

gotmine
I'm curious about the white t-shirt BS myself...Is there some sort of dress code? Do you also have to wear penny loafers and slacks w/ a piss cutter crease. I wanna know WTF this was about.

bill3542
up back on my dads property we have a nice range out to 100 yards but i also go to shoots in a neighboring county where class 3 shows up and can shoot out to 650 yds.

lextech
At my range we have to wear either tactical camo or S&M type lingere, dress codes a bitch but the other shooters give me lots of space when Im wearng my assless chaps.

KalashnikovMarine
both, there's a shit ton of desert to go blasting at round here and there's a state range that's friggin huge and rather nice (also: free)

I am a member of a local gun club and live in my wifes hometown which means that I don't know many people with land so I shoot at the club.

oaksalad
Hi, I can shoot .22 stuff at home.I have a bullet trap. For everything else,I go to the gun club.

IanMor
For centerfire stuff (rifles and the occasional pistol) I go to the range. For .22s and my muskets I can shoot them in the backyard towards the creek. I got neighbors and they don't mind because I don't shoot too much in the back yard. If me and my buds have a "day" of shooting the muskets I go to the range with them. No need to unneccesarilly piss off the neighbors.

I was having a few barley pops with my buddies tonight. I have the unit's 3" ordnance rifle in the backyard on a trailer. The tow vehicle craped out so we parked it here temporarily. We got to talking about the pool balls and black powder I got kicking around and how much fun we would have touching that bitch off in the backyard. I hadn't drank that much, therefore I am not in jail and able to write this. So you know what we decided to do... Or not do.

DE44Magna
Looks like I'm the only one who does not shoot..... I put that cause I have not been able to afford enough ammo to shoot in like 6mo. I use a range cause its the only thing available in SoCal.

Mike U.
Well, since my mom lives in the middle of some of the thickest forest/jungle I've ever seen, I can safely shoot on her property. She's got miles of it around her.
BUT, while at home I use the local free public rifle range.

I used to use pellet rifles and lo-noise .22 rounds for pest control around my house, but, after an unfortunate ricochet I've given that up.
We have small children in the vicinity now and I don't want to risk hurting a child. I couldn't live with myself if that happened. :cry_small :sad_small

the eXiLe
All the time.

Kinda got the competition bug bag though. :)

Prophet67
Unfortunately, I am stuck going to ranges which sucks, always restrictive and always surrounded by noobs that like to do dumb shit like, When they turn to look at someone or to say something the muzzle of their gun looks with them instead of keeping it pointed away/downrange/any direction but a safe one....

Anybody here live in Hernando County, Fl with property that would let me hook up w/ 'em & shoot?! I'll spring for the (after shooting) beer! lol...

that all sounds pretty fancy indeed.

about as far out as i will go is wearing football cleats to a Garand match.

i didnt get the whole white t-shirt thing either.

bigwheel
We have three club ranges with 560 yards being the longest, about every
5th shooter I meet has a private range on his property. So invites are common.
One friend has a 750 yard range but it's a poke and half to get to. He is a builder
for a firearms manufacturer and works up loads for every rifle he builds so
he needs the place.

Gunruner
In Maine I had 10 acres surrounded by woods for miles. I shot off the rear deck or out the garage in the winter. I now live in WV and all is private property NO TRESPASSING. I belong to the Putnam County Gun Club. 300m rifle, 100m pistol, 100m shotgun, large western town for the SASS, 3 combat pistol tracks and general use steel targets. Great range, open 365 days a year w/combination lock cost $80 per year

Yeah that's a real bitch...we have simlar rules. The chaps can be a real bitch in winter...got some angorra chaps last year, helps a bit but 40 rounds prone can really rub.

FloridaAKM
Built my own small 100 meter range here on my property with a LEO approved rear backstop. Works great unless I get a .50 cal Browning, which will make me have to go find a range. I don't like ranges and the stuff you have to do to make the range nazi's happy!

spiders88
I shoot at the local range. We are lucky the Ocala National Forest is close by so it is free and open from sun up to sun down. It is only 100 yards with shotgun and pistol and rifle range. It is covered and there is no range master. Been there over 12 times and everyone is always nice and friendly. Local Police even set up the target holders each week. No full auto fire, but anything else is fine. The setup is tight but hey its free. The say eye and ear protection required but no one wears eye protection. Otherwise I have seen girls in halter tops to guys in overalls anything goes....its more a family place, but we do get some military and police.

Eugene Onegin
I use to shoot my rifles at the Sleepy Creek Range in my area but now it's only open to shot guns .

LMAO! Man, that's some funny shat!

I use the range also and it's run by the Village People. If you get a 3 shot group within an inch at 100 yds, they do the YMCA dance.

Asmodeus
Land. :)

GDR_ak47
A crappy state run rifle ranger. I used to belong to a private one before we moved but the ones here cost about $300 a year wich is too pricy for me.At the state range they only let you shoot in three shot groupings, its only 100yrds and its full of gangsta wannabes. Makes me homesick.

squirrelblaster
i have my own range on some property my parents own, the property is 68 acres of forrest so the longest i can really get is about 100 yards, if i want to shoot farther than that id have to start cutting down trees, in the winter though i use an indoor range, mostly for pistol shooting though, there rifle range is patheticly small. thats one of the reasons i hate winter! lol

Jaimenv
I use a privately run range. I like their family year membership option.

44echo
Haven't been to a real range since 1983, till a friend passed on I could use his and only 3 miles away.

My godmother's 2 year old daughter was shot through the heart with a .22 by someone doing just that. She was sitting on a swing and just fell back. Guy doing the shooting was after birds in his strawberries, shot from about 200yds away.

Pretty sad.

I would imagine it occupied much of his thoughts for the remainder of his life.
