View Thread: .308 AK?

I have seen an AK-47 selling on Gun broker just recently. I believe it was made in Yugoslavia. A Mitchel Arms -7.62 Horrible price of $2000 on it!! Buy it now for $2950.00
On the side it said AK-47 7,62 x 51

So, The Saiga, in .308, convert it back to a PG, forward Fire Control Group, put on the furniture, is this now considered an AK-47?

Reason I'm asking is the AK-47 is a 7.62 x 39 round
The AK-74 is a Kalisnikov AK in 5.56 X 39mm Soviet round.
The AK-101, AK-102 are .223 rifles.

Where does that leave the 7.62 X 51? Is it still considered an AK-47?

Where does that leave the PSL?It is pretty much an AK(on steroids:)) in 7.62X54

If you wanna get technical, the AK47 actually refers to the original milled receiver versions, the stamped versions are an AKM. The later AK74 was in 5.45X39 caliber, but that was not the only change. The "AK 100" series of rifles are available in 7.62X39, 5.45X39, and 5.56X45. The 100 series are based on the same basic design, just different calibers.

The Mitchell Yugoslavian rifles, as are most of the full size Yugos, are based on the RPK, not the AKM.

So is a Mitchell .308 an AK47? Zastava apparently thinks it is.

There are 7.62x51 Galil's and Vamet's. There is also the 7.62x51 Vepr. The Russian Saiga and Vepr in 7.62x51 both have three lug bolts. The two lug bolts couldn't pass the current CIP proof testing in 7.62x51. The older two lug 7.62x51 bolts do have a larger right side lug. The original AK design relied on the right lug only for lock up and to take recoil. The left lug was originally designed to only turn the bolt going in to battery. When the stamped AKM came out, machining was more precise and the narrower trunnion caused the design to change to sharing recoil between both the right and left bolt lugs. On the two lug 7.62x51 AK's only the right bolt lug size is increased and the left bolt lug is standard size.

Is picture #3 here a 3 lug design or is it showing the larger single lug? REF: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=138211253

The 3 lug Saiga .308 should be a pretty substantial arangement then. I inted to load down just a bit, and use faster burning powders on the 16" I have slated for getting. Burn the powder up in the 16" and not outside the barrel, giving good velocity, without flash, and even reduced, will have a performance increase over the 7.62 x 39 Soviet and better bullet selections.

Darth AKSarben! You visit here too? Man, you are just everywhere in the AK world aren't you?

LOL Funny how you spelled my user name, Hammerhead, with an AK at the beginning. It's actually Nebraska spelled backwards, and there is/was a society by that name in Nebraska. If I would have though of it sooner before making up the name I think I would choose AKsarben as the name. Don't forget to look in the survivalistboard.com as well.

For those that don't know, the CIP, that allesennogwat refers to above is a proofing trial, that loads and fires a weaon to over pressure by 125% of intended maximum cartridge pressure, and then the weapon is inspected for any stress problems or other problems. If it is successful, and has not been damaged then it gets a proof mark of that factory.

Well, got one tonight (.308 Saiga) and cleaned it and put the furniture from my Saiga .223 on it for the time being. I have the T6 stock that has the built on PG that attahces to the stock, so used that for the .308 My .223 has a moved Tapco G2 FCG, with normal PG, and left it there with the old butt stock that came with it. Functional, but will look to get a different stock qute soon.

I bought a 308 Saiga in early 2008 and converted it myself. I have never regretted it. I killed a buck and two does with it last November; its a sturdy, accurate weapon. I recently sighted it in after changing the scope mount, shot two five shot groups at 100 yards- all 10 shots in the 1 inch bullseye.

Here's the link to what the conversion looks like.

Nice looking AK !! The original recoil spring has a meta piece on it. It is there for a reason. It is not there as a buffer but as a spacer. More correctly, the term on it is a limiter, as it limits the amount of rearward travel the recoil spring does. Too much rear ward travel and your bolt lug would pop up and out of the notch in the railing.

Very nice conversion!
