View Thread: PSL feeding issues

My psl has feeding issues, i try 6 different mags and still the same result. With most of the mags the first round shoots fine but cant feed the 2nd round. I try to change the springs(put it in reverse order) but the same results. Any suggestions? Does anyone knows any good gunsmith in south Jersey, Philadelphia to take it? I also read the other thread but my problem isnt the same as the other member, my bolt carrier doesnt even comes half way and hits the ammo at the middle of the casing. Seems that the tip of the bullet hits the area before goes to the chamber
Thanks

Take the magazine apart and set the spring and floorplate assembly aside. Using just the follower and mag body, try and (using your fingers) move the follower up and down in the body looking for any tight spots or burrs that could be hanging up the follower.

I haven't had this problem with my PSL magazines, but have had other types that the follower needed a couple licks with a file to move smoothly. I've also read of cases where a spotweld in the body raised a lip that needed to be lapped off for the same reason.

Are you sure it the mags? 6 different mags makes me think that maybe that it is a gas problem. You might want to make sure that the gas block and vent are clean and not obstructed. Take it out with a buddy and see if you can tell if it is short stroking.

I dont believe its the mags cause they seem to be working fine.
Klickitat, could you explain to me what is a "short stroking"?
Thanks

"short stroking"

Has to do with the action not going all the way back when it fires the loaded round.

This could be caused by not getting enough or no gas at all from the fired round to drive the piston/Bolt Carrier Group back far enough to strip a fresh round from the mag. So if the BCG does move when firing the rifle then you have the "short stroking" condition.

If the gas port hole at the barrel to gas block is blocked/obstructed you will experience maybe what's happening.

PS. Just trying to help here.

In the video below the guy has some "short-stroking" problems with his saiga SG.

Klickitat has the right idea.

You fire the first round and it doesnt strip the next round from the mag. If you manually cycle the bolt all the way back and let it slam forward, does it then pick up a round? If it does you might be short stroking.

+1 on the possibility of the gas port being patially blocked. If you find that this is the case you may be able to use a needle file with a hooked tip to slowly file away some of the gas block material that is covering the gas port. You can also get a reduced power mainspring which will reduce the ammount of force needed for the carrier to travel over the hammer this will allow it to travel a bit further back(It worked on my Siaga-12).

Thanks, i will try to see if the gas port is blocked. Is hoppes 9 is the best cleaning solvent to use for that?

ak47junky
hoppes is good but I prefer Butch's bore shine. Whichever solvent you use always check it on a hidden location of any firearm you clean with it to be certian it wont harm the finnish.

Any recommendation for a gunsmith?

If I’m reading this right (finally) – then all 6 magazines are having the SAME problem? If that’s that case – then I doubt the problem is magazine-based. Sounds “under-gassed” as everyone has mentioned…

You should be able to shine a super–bright bore light into the barrel (in a darkened room) and look down through the gas port to see it there’s a partial blockage.

i just came back from the range and after cleaning everything I still have feeding issues. Seems the tip of the bullet gets stuck at the feeding ram.
any recommendations for a shop where i can send it to have it fixed?
Thanks again for everyone for their advices,

Not to be a jerk, but are you loading the mags correctly? On one occasion I got a jam on the second round. When I pulled the mag, I found I had inadvertently gotten the rim on the second round behind the rim of the third - ouch.
