View Thread: Best scope mount for Ak 74?

RugerFan
I was interested in getting one and wanted opinions on what are the better ones and how easy they are to install?

DPH has a couple...one is more of a permanent mount that bolts to the rear tang. Kind of a pain if you shoot a lot of corrosive like I do. They also have a quick-detach model of the same variety, but from the accounts I have read, they didn't appear to me as being very stable.
What I have come across is the "Dog leg" mount sold by Texas Weapons Systems. It is a 2 piece mount that attaches to the rear sight block, replacing the rear sight, and attaches to a block screwed to the rear tang where the stock mounting screws go.

It is very easy to install and set up propely. Cleaning is made easier by the quick detach lever on the back.

Sorry for the out-of-focus pics. But you get the idea.

TWS also makes a rear windage-adjustable peep sight for the unit which flips up or down.

The unit is black anodized aluminum and very lightweight. I thought it would be a good idea to use some blue loc-tite after the initial setup, to ensure things would remain where they were set. I had an NCStar 4x scope that I quickly became discontent with(QD mount), and ended up returning, but for the time it was on there, the mount would return to zero after cleaning, disassembling, reassembling, etc. I think for ease of installation, one of these might be your best bet. I would've mentioned the side-mount receiver scope mounts, but I believe those would require more skill/time to install, maybe.
This was an easy install for me...less than 3 minutes to get it installed and adjusted to my weapon.

I'm not affiliated, but I've been in the same boat recently looking for a scope mount that was easy to mount, set, and then not worry about as far as returning to zero. With a Tantal, I also needed one that wasn't a side-mount. This seems to cover all grounds, and the owner of TWS is a very nice guy as well, eager to help his customers.

Hope this is of some help.

If you can put a side mount on your AK, I'd recommend looking at some of the Russian scopes that are integrated with the mount. I recently got a PK-01V and am very happy with it, especially because I wanted a mount that wouldn't interfere with cleaning the rifle yet would hold the optic low.

Got this 1+ week ago.
The weaver rail was not tightened enough! Once I took care of that it's rock-solid.

ABR how easy was that to install on your ak? Any extra drilling etc?

Where are you from Abrzwok?

I noticed your AK is an Arsenal M1 so I expect it is military. There appears to be a selector on the pistol grip similar a Galil. How good does it work?

Rugerfan. I strongly prefer rail mounted optics like the kobra. You can get a Kobra or other optic to install on an Utilimak gas tube mounted rail. Also LaRue offers a nice looking mount that replaces the rear sight. It mounts the tiny burris optic and has a backup iron site.

Thx-Ace

What I am not understanding is how KOBRA mounts on the side of the ak=74 without drilling. Can some explain this to me before I take a leap of faith and jump into something that may or may not work?

KernelKrink
The AK74 must have a Soviet style optics mounting rail installed on the side to use the KOBRA style sights. The mount then clamps onto this rail:

I'm from Finland. That's a 47, bulgarian civilian version - I accidentally posted on the 74 area...

The BP-02 mounted on the side rail. Push the mount on the rail, move the lever to forward position and it's attached.

For a drop-in, no mod mount, its hard to beat the ultimax.

Won't that boil?
Fire 2 full mags in quick succession, at least with 47 the tube gets HOT, a friend boiled the lacquer off his wooden forward grip. Wonder what that kind of heat does to batteries.

Just guessing of course, I haven't tested an ultimax and the smaller ammo could be easier heat-wise.

hasn't yet.

most of the guys running ak's in carbine classes run that mount with aimpoints. here is a thread with pics of larry vickers, templar, and thekatar all with that setup.

i'm sure it heats up, but so far that's what alot of guys are running and it works. i bought an slr-107f specifically for this setup. i'm not a big fan of the side rail on an ak, using a scope it's hard to get cheek weld and a dot sight is too high.

What is a good place to buy these? They don't seem to have a order online option.

Try here. http://www.kalinkaoptics.com/default.aspx

Look for Side Rails.

Right under the Scopes.

Tantal has an Email link on his page, email him and he will send you the latest price and availabilty list, along with instructions on how to order from him. Not as easy as a shopping cart, but not excessively difficult either.

Looks like Kalinka's site is temporarily down. Try again in a day or two.

They must be down.

It works because I checked it after posting.

I check all links I post.

Keep trying till they're back up.
