Ok I have noticed lately that ammo for the PSL is drying up. I used up 440 rd of my case of Russian surplus and was going to order more but I can't find any. The only stuff I can find is AIM Surplus has Hungarian rounds at 89.98 and J&G has Bulgarian rounds for 82.50 both are cheaper then anywhere else I could find. The question is which is better?? Has anyone else found any other good ammo out there. I want surplus not the non-corrosive expensive stuff.
Slick
RGuns has Russian "silver tip" 148gr light ball for $90 a tin ($85 per tin for 2 or more) ->

I bought much of my ammo from J&G because shipping was a lot cheaper since they're closer to me. The only thing I don't like about buying from J&G is that they don't email you a tracking number so that you know when your order is going to arrive.

not a bad price for soviet stuff.
I plan on making an "ammo run" to JG next month and stock up on the bulgarian stuff. I wish i could find the Czech silver tip.........

Thanks slick I really like the Russian Surplus I've had no issues with what I have shot so far. Do you like the Bulgarian or Russian better? I notice the Bulgarian is quite popular but have never shot it. All the Russian I have seen are from the 70s.

The surplus 54r is starting to dry up ,I would just buy the Bulgarian from J&G or the Hungarian from AIM, it's gonna run out soon and you'll miss out.Thats why I stocked up 6 months ago.I knew this day was gonna come.

You can find it on Gunbroker in small amounts.I have 740rds of 1965 silvertip left and I plan on holding on to it because I may never see it again.

I have to be honest and tell you that I cannot give you a knowledgeable answer to that. I have two different kinds of Chinese ammo and some Czech, a couple kinds of Russian, and a boatload of Bulgarian. I’d be embarrassed to admit how much ammo I have and how little I’ve fired. I’ve shot my Mosins a good bit but I ordered my PSL about 2 weeks after the election and it took me nearly four months to get the rifle and another month to get the scope and all the other goodies due to a shipping screw-up. Because I live in CA, I didn’t have a lot of dealers willing to pull the stock and sell me a Raddlock – so I had to wait.
In the interim, I had two major spinal surgeries (because I’m disabled) and I only had about 4-days lead after getting my gun until I hit the hospital. I was dying to shoot my PSL before going in but didn’t want to get into any cleaning problems after shooting corrosive ammo as I ALWAYS go back and re-swab my bores a week after shooting corrosive ammo. It’s just because I’m “anal-retentive” about how much money I’ve got tied up in my collection and the deep desire to keep my guns in perfect condition.
Anyways, I see my surgeon in the second week of September and need to ask him if recoil could harm my spinal bone-grafts. I also have a brand-new .45-70 to shoot and am “chomping at the bit”. Hopefully this will explain why I have not posted any range results or offer advice on what ammo works best in a PSL. I don’t like “Internet commado’s” or people who post as “fact” what they have read somewhere. If I give advice, it’s first-hand experience, otherwise I make it known that I’m passing along second-hand information I’ve read.
Sorry for the rambling reply and if it sounds like a lot of excuses, but I just want to be totally honest about what I say – but I do know of a lot of sources for various items.. Wish me luck – because I’m tired of being banished to shooting only rimfire ammo!

good luck slick....you last post suffers from pain pill run on and on and on and on...you may be OK on the recoil transmittal to the spine....especially with a PSL...the MOsins may be harsher...
if I had to buy PSL ammo I would go to gunbroker and get the 7n1.
the surplus x54r ammo has been drying up since '54
How much Bulgy do you have Slick?
I have a couple thousand rounds....I have more of the hungriman silver tip.
yeah, I think the ammo crunch saw the last of the 45$ tins of bulgarian available from Century a few months ago....now the price is DOUBLE. heheh...the Obammo Crunch of '09.
I can only repeat what other smart fellers are saying....buy the x25 tins while they're still 10 cents a round.

Thanks Bounce, I'm one of the "lucky ones" as I made it through the surgeries without any unpleasant surprises. They told me I'd be 100% disabled for a year while I wait for bone to grow into the fusion cages - so it's not something I want to take a chance on messing up.
How much Bulgy do you have Slick?.
Let's just say I have a good supply..

Thanks again slick hope the back heals quick. Reminds me of this guy that was out at the range last week. Had a bad back and was spotting. He finally gave in a shot my psl and the other guys ar-15 and he almost feel down a few minutes after since his back was spazing out. Felt bad for the guy, but you are right to wait until the doctor says ok. Thank god he had a ride since he was almost in tears.

a buddy of mine has like 10 tins of the bulgy stuff from JG - makes me jealous. it's not the best stuff in the world, but its good and a fraction of the price of 7n1.
I am not so sure i wanna break the bank buying high end ammo for my PSL just to get slighly better groups at 600 yards.

Factory 10 bulgarian is probably the best stuff you can get aside from 7n1. It is the most consistent surplus I've used so far, 1.5" at 100 yards almost all the time. For some reason it started to keyhole at 6-700 yards though. wtb REAL MATCH AMMO in 150gr for my PSL.
If you want silver tipe I have some I'll sell you, I'd have to check but I think there's ~200 rounds of it in my ammo bin.

Weird, I have to admit I've only put about 600 rounds through My rifle but I have found the Bulgarian ammo to be quite sloppy in comparison to the Russian boat tail. I got both from J@G. The Bulgarian ammo seems to load and unload a bit smoother. But the Russian was notably more accurate. In fact with the Bulgarian My groupings were as much as twice as big!! I suppose these rifles do all have different characteristics.

I really liked the russian silver tip that I have shot. I am sitting on a few tins but am nervous about running out an no ammo around. The only issue I am having isn't with the ammo but my damn scope screws keep loosing up when I shoot so my sight goes from zeroed into where the hell did that go. I am buying a new scope soon so I guess it isn't an issue.
