View Thread: Got my Mosin yesterday from AIM

JRIVEN00
Just got a 1891/30 round reciever from AIM. The front handguard is modified with grooves for your hand (unfortunately right handed, I'm a lefty) must have been done by the Russian it was issued to, I've neveer seen it before. Also the buttstock has the letter Z stamped in it and a smaller H. Are these armory marks? Its a nice rifle, my 3rd Mosin. I also have a hex reciever and a Tula M44 and those don't have any stamps on the wood. Anyone seen marks like these? Thanks
Jim

Yeah, what the hell? No pics?

I don't know how to post pictures or I would. I have found out that its not a Z but a letter in the Russian alphabet. I still haven't cleaned all the cosmoline off yet but when I have I may try to post pictures. I've got the digital camera and all that shit but I've never taken the time to educate myself with the photo stuff. The rifle also has a few small numbers stamped in the wood and an arrow. They've got to be armory/arsenal marks. What they mean who knows

I just ordered a stack of rounds and a few HEX. I am filling up my collection a bit. The HEX are up $10 and the rounds will start climbing when the supplies start running out. Get the rounds while they are still cheap. AIM has always delivered a good product.

+1 I wish they would get some 38's and 44's I know Century has the 38's but I've never bought from them. I am going to send them my 03 FFL and might get one from them. Seems I can always depend on AIMS quality

Try these people,in addition to Finnish M39's,( some of which you can buy without an FFL,because the receivers are pre-1898) they have some very nice M38's and M44's,and they are great to deal with. Buy in confidence.

my 7 showed up and they are in great shape. 4 had the same carved out places on the stocks as mentioned above. Never seen such a thing. It IS something that I cannot find on the web. I will post pix this weekend to show them.
The cut out is just behind the rear band. It is on both sides and looks like the place your thumb may go while you are pressing the band release. Pictures to come. It is not some ruski bubba thing either. These look like they are some kind of factory modification to the standard wooden stock.

BTW, the wood on these 91/30s looks the best of any I have gotten. A few marks here and there, but the shellac is NOT flaking off. Color looks great and the barrels all have strong rifling.

now I am getting confused. These things seem like they may be 1/2 PU rifles (If there is such a thing). There are also some from Izsevsk. Out of the 5 round recievers I ordered, 4 were like this. The 2 hex I purchased are not like this.

Maybe it is nothing because the stock on this rifle has the carved out spot also just like many others around here:

The recesses in the stock I have is where your fingers rest on the front handguard when aiming.

took another look this morning and figured it out. The rifles are 1943 and were re-arsenaled with post war stocks. The new stocks are also the reason they look so good. They have a pretty clean cosmoline on them too. It is not as dried out as ones I have gotten in the past.

My stock is not the same as what Riven is talking about.
