View Thread: Another OAL Question.

Allright, after reading the other thread about oal, it occured to me that I might be confused about the law a little.

The way I read the federal law, a rifle must have a barrel length of 16 inches and an overall length of 26.

Now the reason I mention it is with the brake screwed on my underfolder it is like 27 or so inches long folded. But if you replace the brake with a barrel nut, the oal folded is reduced to about 25 and a 1/4 give or take, side folder comes in at about 25 and 1/2 without the brake.

If I am reading the law correctly, wouldn't I have to weld the brake on to be legal? Theres alot of folders out there, I must be wrong or the ATF would have jumped on this along time ago.

I have always asumed that it is both,But my question is, does it have to be both or just the 16 inche barrel?

And what if I wanted to make a short ak, i.e. cut the barrel back and weld a brake on the make the total barrel length 16 inches, build it with an underfolder stock, technically I would still have a legal barrel, but the oal would be to short. SBR?

Fugging confusing laws, Some day we are going to get a strong constitutionalist president, who every time he has to crap, he will rip a page out of the firearms code to wipe his rear! Well maybe not but I can hope.

Folding or collapsable stocks are measured with the stock extended. Fed official procedure. MI however is a "special case" as their AG reads the law as measuring with it folded. An underfolder in MI could be considered an SBR or a "Pistol" under state law depending on how long the bbl is. Go figure.

Thanks Kernel, I figured I was thinking to far into it.
