Sent mine in March 27th and it was in my mailbox May 26th. This was my first Form 1. I called them and they said it wasn't even in the system yet, but 5 days after my call I had the paperwork. Not sure if the call hurried anything up, but they were nice when I talked to them. I did go the Trust route, so no finger prints had to be processed.

Can someone explain the trust route please????? I keep hearing about it but am confused. I have the paper work to go the CnR route for my SBR. it's on hold now due to trying to sell the house and move. No point in doing it twice. I know when using the CNR FFL then you have to due all the finger prints and such.....Which is no big deal. I just see a ton of people going the trust route and saying it's easier??????

Here is the Guide I used:

http://arizonagunlist.com/How_to_buy_NFA_class3_weapons_with_a_revocable_living_trust_without_a_CLEO_signoff.html

I didn't have to go that route because our CLEO will sign off on the form. I just didn't feel like bothering him or messing around with finger prints. Every other place I have lived in Ohio the CLEO would not sign the Form 1 making the Trust the only way to go. Basicly since a Trust can't be fingerprinted or photographed you don't have to do the police crap.

Thanks Harpy

Mine came back 4 months to the day, had to make some changes and send them back for approval.

I have mailed my form 1 paperwork for several different SBR rifles...... problem is, I sent the paperwork in before I purchased a new home in the state I live in. I contacted the local branch which gave me the NFA branch in VA. They told me that all I needed to do was fill out form 5320.20. I'm not transporting an nfa firearm. I'm just changing my address while the form 1 is in process..... they may have not received it before I changed my address. Any suggestions?

Anyone?!

I had several SBRs to do. I submitted mine at end of last May and got all the approved form 4s last week.
The year before it was taking about 2 months to complete the entire process.

What I am hearing, with the new administraton, it is taking anywhere from 4 to 6 months from start to finish.
Be patient. You can call and ask but at best it won't speed up the process and at worst it can slow things down if you piss them off.

Ironically if you file for Welfare I'm sure the government would make sure you aren't delayed for one week.

Guys as of the 4/09 it is taking 137.5 days on average for the processes. This is from the website
http://www.nfatca.org

they are over run with applications and are doing there best this letter was from the BATF to a member of said forum.

If you have been noticing an increase in wait times for your NFA forms to process, you are not imagining things. The simple fact of the matter is that applications for transfers have surged while the staffing level at NFA branch remains static.

Here's some of the salient points from the BATF presentation held at the NFATCA meeting at Knob Creek in April:

* Since the beginning of 2005 to the end of 2008, NFA branch approved 2,162,884 transfers. In 2005 it was 168,629 and in 2008 it was 922,704. That's right, nearly a million approved transfers last year! Form 4's, specifically, nearly doubled over that same period from 14,290 to 26,598.

* The NFATCA's efforts to help streamline the approval process with the NFA branch paid huge dividends and saw wait times dramatically drop in in 2007. Unfortunately, volume has been surging, as mentioned, and wait times have been getting longer. For example, here is the data on Form 4 average processing time:

* 2005 88.21 days
* 2006 42.70 days
* 2007 30.63 days
* 2008 80.68 days

2009(ytd) is currently at a whopping 138.77 days. That's nothing to sneeze at! One of the examiners was even heralded for processing over 1300 transfers in just one month!

The fact of the matter is that we, as an NFA community, are submitting amazingly large numbers of transfer requests and the NFA branch is doing their best to get them turned around quickly. The best things that we can do is make sure that the forms are filled out correctly and legibly, that the payments are good (yes, people bounce checks to the government), and that we do our very best to not call and pester the examiners so that they can keep their heads down and get our forms completed!
