View Thread: Safety no worky

I have a Henderson Defense converted 7.62x39 and I found out a few weeks ago the safety doesn't hold down the trigger like it should. When you insert the safety, it seems too easy to push down over the sear (compared to other AK's I've owned). The tab doesn't look ground off, but it does look short. Do I have a trigger problem or a safety problem? (or is it a build problem?) Does anybody know the proper length of the safety "tab". The FCG is a Tapco G2 single.

I don't know about other people but I have ckecked the saftey on every gun I ever bought. When I take a new gun shooting I load it,aim at the target and try and shoot with the saftey on just to see if it will fire.I do not know why I started doing this but have done it with every gun I have purchased or been given by my Dad.The good news is I have never had a saftey not function on any gun.On the AK I have heard of guys bending the saftey out away from the receiver a bit if it was too tight or to hard to move.In your situation either the trigger or saftey could be the issue but could the hole in the receiver be off enough to cause this?td

Thanks TD. The hole is what I'm most worried about right now. I didn't convert this Saiga (supposedly Henderson Defense did) so I hope somebody on this forum might know. Do you cut a new hole for the safety when doing a Saiga conversion? I don't see an old one. I got the gun on GB so I didn't get to look before buying. But I got a good deal assuming I can fix this. Can someone measure the length (downward) of their safety tab and let me know?

I am not 100% positive but I think when converting a SAIGA that you DO have to move the trigger hole forward.td

Thanks for the link. Looks like the trigger moves forward, but the safety does not. So that narrows it down a bit. Either the "tab" on the safety was shortened to let it by the disconnector, the trigger was cut too far forward (but that seems like it would cause a whole lot more problems with actual firing), or there is a problem with the Tapco FCG (easy to believe)
I'd really appreciate somebody measuring the "tab" on the safety lever on their Saiga.

I'm from the Saiga-12 forum, now here also, and No, you don't move the safety lever hole. It stays just where it is. the trigger is moved forward, but only after you remove the false bottom plate that was riveted on. When that is removed it has the original trigger hole and also a hole for the pistol grip nut. The safety lever stays exactly where it is.
Take off the dust cover. Remove the rebound/recoil spring. Remove the bolt carrier, and set aside. You can now look down in at the works. With the safety in the 'upper' postion (on) if you work the trigger back and forth with your finger it will move the catch on the hammer but will not let it release the hammer. If it does then it has a problem. With the safety lever in the down postion, it should release the hammer. Keep your finger pressure on the hammer to keep from striking the front pin hard.
If it won't release the hammer you have no problem when it's in the UP or SAFE position.
