View Thread: Life of a plastic mag?

OK, everything I have ever owned that was plastic has gone bad sooner or later. From knobs to the whole front end of a Trans Am it seems to give up eventually. How long with an AK-74 mag last? Will it last most of our lives? Just wondering, Thanks

What kind of AK74 mag?
US made commercial grade? Some won't last a magazine full.
Military issue 'plastic' mag? Barring a fire or you literally destroying it, it should last virtually forever (may need a spring change after 10,000 rounds or so)

Well, I got one very worn Izmesh, a semi worn Bulgarian and two almost new Bulgys but I was just a little concerned if 20 years from now that the plastic would be so brittle they would explode under the pressure of being loaded. I collect Eversharps and some of them from the 50s will litteraly break apart if you try to write with them.

I don't know for sure but I have some Tula plum magazines that where sanitized that look to be 30 years old and the still work great. Plastic does not seem brittle and no signs of chipping.

I have some 74 mags that are approaching 30 years old. Just don't leave them out in the sun, it seems to degrade the polys.
As mentioned, the springs may need replacing every couple of centuries or so as needed. Just enjoy em, they will most likely out live us.
