View Thread: Looking for a bolt action

Va_AK
So I went to a new (to me) range today and it's awesome. So I've decided my next purchase will be a bolt action. I don't need a huge caliber. Just something to plink and maybe do a little hunting. I can't decide between a wood stock or a black synthetic stock. Oh and probably in the $300-$400 range.

Thanks for the help guys.

If I were in the market i`d take a good look at the Savage line of rifles, heard good things about their Accu-triggers. Also priced in your range or a hair more.

Firefly
The Remington Model 700 is a very good line of rifles too.

swabbie
you can't buy a better 308 caliber rifle that also has a self defense capability

excellent bores..firing a modern reasonably available caliber.an easy round to reload for..even with a decent single stage press

cast your own..or buy cast projectiles for fun shooting

I'll probably get laughed at ..but hey

You might even consider a Mosin rifle in 7.62x54 if you don't reload..ammo is still reasonable, and with some triiger work, both of these are 400 to 600 yard rifles

+1 for Swabbie -

I have an Enfield No. I Mk III in .308, first time at the range with it, first shot in the 9 ring at 100 yards. Next 4 shots joined it for a group under 2 inches. All with issue iron sights. Hell of a rifle. Plus you get the convenience of a detachable mag.

+1 for Fortis also. The Savage rifles are excellent and very affordable. It's easy to swap barrels for multiple calibres. Helps to have the bolt jeweled for smooth action.

All good choices. A Ruger 77 in synthetic makes a good gun. I am NOT a fan of Ruger. But the 77s are nice, shoot decent, they come in a wide selection of calibers, and on the used market, you can get them cheap.

The rifle of choice for me is the Remington 700 (pre-locking shroud).

Swabbie's got it going on though. It would be real hard to beat his to choices for an excellent, inexpensive rifle. Either of his choices I'd be proud to have. I do believe your not really a rifleman until you've owned an Enfield.

Whatsthe cheapest, most readily available cailber?

Firefly
I would say 7.62x54r....thats why I own a coupla Mosins. If you get one with a decent barrel, you'll also have the option of bulk corrosive ammo at a good price, compared to 308 or 30-06 .It is an economical way to go.

Hard to beat the Mosin 91/30 or a m44.You can pick up ammo anywhere from $155 to $200 for 880 rounds. They are a blast to shoot.Rifle will run from $80 up to $125 or so depending on where you get it.On youtube a guy is hitting a 18 inch steel plate at 1000 yards with a Mosin 91/30.td

That is a good choice ,I got one in 30-06 and its my most accurate rifle. ,but ammo is expensive. It would'nt hurt to also have a Mosin and some bulk 7.62x54 laying around either.

Black_Wolf
What you planning on hunting?

Deer, Coyotes?

You can pick up the old savage 340's in cals anywhere from 22 hornet 222 223 225 and 30-30.

I've got some nice ones I picked up for pretty cheap.

Not bench guns but accurate enough to get the job done.

+1 on the Mosin. I took my M44 out yesterday, I forgot how much fun a bolt is.

Pricey ain't always better, save ya a few bucks and have fun. 762x54 will let you know about it to, good round.

$300 to $400 is going to limit your choices if you are looking for a new gun. Ruger 77, Rem 700, are going to be priced way above that. Factor in a decent scope and rings (Ruger comes with rings) and you would be way over budget. My only knock on the Mosins is the safety is not exactly the most ergonomic thing and requires some effort to put in the fire position. Not a big deal at the range but kind of a pain if you need a quick shot at a deer, elk, etc.

New or used, doesn't matter. I'll be shoppping around this week.

By the way, I was at a local shop, WASRs still going for 899!!! I told them they were out of their minds.

Va_AK
Oh I saw some Arsenals for 1200 too!

Anyone ever deal with these guys? This seems like a great deal.

Va_AK
What options are out there for a scope mount on a Mosin? A lot of the ones I've seen are more towards the front of the rifle. Not a fan of that.

They also make side mount ones that sets the scope to the left side of the gun but normal position front to back.

This one seems a little pricey but I'm sure google would turn up some other options.

Here's a cheaper one but requires the bolt handle to be changed

Went looking around at a couple places today.

Saw 2 M44s.. $239 and $289.

Saw a really nice Savage.. not sure what model. Black composite stock, heavy barrel and a decent scope for $439? I think.

More searchin to happen soon.

Black_Wolf
What cal on the Savage?

With Accu trigger or without?

You like it?

Buy it.

Va_AK
Caliber was .223

Accu trigger?

I did like it.

Look it up online. Pretty cool

.223 with bull barrel and decent glass.

Already be in my car! :laugh_sma

Haggle on that price too if you go for it.

Bet ya can get it cheaper!

If you run across a used Remington 788 they were good inexpensive rifles. If you can find a used 700 in your price range, that'd be a good choice as well.
