View Thread: swaging question

ive seen a few different bullet swaging companies that offer fairly affordable presses/dies. is there any reason a home case swaging press isnt a viable option?
i dont even reload let alone manufacture components, im just curious. it seems to me that if someone (again not me) had the brass (and primers lmao) making their own cases and bullets would be pretty hardcore

anybody?

Casting is a lot cheaper as the bare minimum is a leadpot and a mold. A swaging setup is several hundred.

Now, Corbin does make a neat little swager setup that converts fired .22LR rimfire cases into .22 caliber bullet jackets for centerfire ammo. A swaged or cast lead core is inserted and then the whole assembly is formed into a jacketed bullet.

I've never seen a home case swager before, cartridge cases are usually made in a multi step process that draws the beass from a tiny slug into a fully formed case with many intermediate steps. Many tons of pressure required for a relatively hard metal (compared to soft lead, anyway).

The brass used in cases is pretty standard but it is heat treated. If the cases are too soft, especially near the rear, they can blow. It takes quite a bit to make a case. The cheap CCI Blazer brass handgun cases are extruded and not formed like more expensive cases.
