what is the best option for some sort of defense ammo for 5.45? the hornady TAP isnt out yet, at least in my area, for the 5.45. any other good options for the time being?

7N6, nothing better. Ask any Taliban who was alive in the 80's.

I agree, 7n6 is your best bet. Hornady is supposed to come out with some Vmax loaded rounds soon. Hopefully other US manufacturers will start loading some after that.

hornady 5.45 vmax rounds would be wicked

The tumbling effect of the 7n6 is without peer. I'd recommend this round. We've been researching this round at the range for 12yrs. now. Just got a new 74 from J&S Sales. Will bring that to the range tomorrow.

I am not sure that putting a soft point or hollow point on the 5.45 would improve it. The Russians did their home work with the air space in the nose, and the core design. Sometime "New and improved" is only new and more expensive. The N76 is still a good buy, price and effect wise.

Hopefully Hornady will use reloadable brass. Also it would be nice to have noncorrosive 5.45 defensive ammo.

What about the 5.45 hollow points I have seen for sale? I think they were silver bear.

Thx-Ace

Thx-AceI tried some, they appear to perform close to the 7n6. much better than the 223 55 gr.

The Wolf commercial ammo has the same space in the nose, but not the steel insert (or corrosive primers).
