View Thread: WASR 2 help

HI there. I just got a WASR 2 and according to the prev. owner, it fired around 400 rds w/out any problems. BUT the rifle did not come with any magazines. Anyway, he sold me some east german bakelite (21 and 23 marked) and some ribbed bulgarian black mags. The east germans are brand new, the bulgies are a bit used.
First range trip, gun FTE. The empty shell was tossed inside the dust cover and stopped the bolt carrier every 3rd or 4th round. this happened with the east german mags. 2nd trip with the bulgy mag, same thing. It worked GREAT IF you take the dust cover off.
Racking the bolt by hand with loaded magazines (above) i found a lot of resistance, sometimes the bolt would not fully close as well. So my guess right now are the magazines OR the magazine catch - either the lever/ rear or the front - and that would make the magazines sit too high OR the extractor starting to wear out (Romanian??).
I love to shoot this thing, plus ammo is cheap. But i don't wanna shoot it without the dust cover all the time.
So if you have any input on how to fix this, it'll be appreciated. Thanks
ps: after the 2nd trip, i cleaned up the springs (it was gritty and might have some resistance) and opened up the wires a lil bit because it gets smaller toward the middle.
Also, even though AK doesn't have the bolt stop/ hold open feature, what causes it to hold the bolt open when you release it slowly ?

the bolt wont close if you rack it slowly by hand. you gotta just let go of the charge handle and let it rack fast and itll close. nothin to do with mags at all
and mine doesnt eject empty shells sometimes, but i figured it was from the laquer on the cases melting to the chamber wall, seeing as it only happens once the gun gets hot (never have problems with wolf fmj or hp thats jsut a steel case)
a friend of mine had the same problem with his sa 85m. he shaved a little off the cover casue his spent rounds were hitting that and bouncing back into the receiver
are the cases that wont eject ending up in the chamber again or just free floating in the receiver?

heres how my mag sits inside the receiver with no problems.
are there any noticeable marks on the cover from where the casing hit?

i see, first off, it was surplus ammo, second, it was the 3rd or 4th round, so it couldn't be that hot.
Also there are some marks on the cover - at first i thought it was the bolt carrier. Anyway, i sort of polished it a bit. FYI, the case floats in the cover, in different locations. 2 times it stovepiped.
I'll be going to the range sunday hopefully (wife says ok :)) and i'll see if i can enlarge the opening on the cover a bit.
I'll post the results.

extractor/spring? take bolt apart clean and check the spring.

Hi Chuwee81-
Can you post pictures? I'd be very interested in seeing what kind of shape your ejector is in. Most likely candidate would be either the extractor or the extractor spring (As Xsapper indicated) or the ejector profile.

I've heard a lot of stories about the wasr's not being disassembled and cleaned properly after the magwell gets milled out bigger for high cap mags.

If it's the ejection causing trouble, inspect the extractor. The Romanian ones can chip or crack easier than the Bulgarian ones. The extractors are interchangeable though.

Thx for the input guys. I will tear down the extractor and give it a thorough cleaning. I'll post pics when i got the chance. Work is killing me right now.
BTW i did go to the range and it still stovepiped, bolt held open about .5" before closing. Happens on every mag every 3rd or 4th round or so. After 2 malfs per mag, took out the dust cover and it worked fine. even did rapid fire-hip shooting type of deal (no bump fire).
I love this thing, from 25-30 yds, it's pretty accurate (minute of beer and wine bottle :)). It just kills me that it's having this issue. If cleaning the extractor not fixing it, then i'll try getting a bulgarian extractor. If that doesn't work, to the gunshow it is.

they don't pay the monkeys enough to do that...which is why you save money, buy a low cap and do it yourself (making sure you keep 922 compliant, of course). thats what i did. im pretty happy with the results. no mag wobble, clean grinds all around....except this is when i bought mine for $275+sales tax back in feb.

Are you seeing any evidence of wear on the inside of the dust cover? Any indication that the bolt carrier may be rubbing/binding on it?
chuwee81
yea, there are some rub marks, i dunno if it's from the shell or the bolt carrier. i did some polishing on the cover. might try polishing the carrier itself if it's still having issues.

Extractor, my first romy did the same thing found the extrac was broken.
