View Thread: Hollow Point or FMJ?

ScottD.
I just made a trade with a buddy tonight and received a case of Wolf Hollow Point 7.62x39. Its nice to keep the zombies at bay, but im concerned about feeding issues. Has anybody ever had a problem feeding hollow points or is it just lore??

Yes, I have, in at least one of my AKs. FTF with at least every 3 rounds. I think it was one of my MAK-90s.

It is just easier to buy FMJs only as I didn't trust them after that and I have better things to do than clean every AK I have just to see if they will feed....

Soft points fed fine, FWIW. The edge of the hollow point hung up just at the feed ramp.

Hollow points feed great in my SKS.Have not tried any in my AK's because of reports about feeding problems so for now the hollow points are reserved for the SKS,td

I also had issues with feeding.... The "flat" nose of the round would slam into the bottom of the feed ramp and not feed. It was every other round w my yugo m70 (right side of doublestack mag)

I used the dremil tool to extend the feed ramp ( no more flat section at the bottom)

Now its fine, I can even bump fire w em.

Every gun is unique.... so your gonna have to try a few mags to see what happens..... But......

THAT IS THE PROBLEM, some guns slam hollow points into the base of the feed ramp. If this happens.... grind it... if not .... your good to go.

SHIT!!!! I MEAN YES THERE TOTAL GARBAGE!!!! BUT I WILL TAKE EM OFF YOUR HANDS!!

Shot plenty of hollow points through my AKs. No problems whatsoever. I like how they fragment, too.

None of it was Wolf, though. Never have shot Wolf in any guns. I use Golden Tiger and the Bears.

Most of the hollow points and soft points that have feeding problems have them because they are too short. If they are long enough they might feed alright. FMJ's should be 55 mm to 56 mm. Some hunting ammo is only 52 mm to 54 mm but the heavier 150 to 154 grain bullets or certain brands of standard weight JHP and SP's might be the same length as FMJ's.

my Saiga .223 rifles will digest anything but my Chinese Norinco 7.62x39 only works with FMJ ammo.

Guess i just always have been Lucky, never any probs.

My MAK90 and WASR10 feeds Wolf black Box 122 and 124 grain Military Classic HPs fine. The 124 grains are suppose to be the 8m3 bullet that fragments similar to 55 grain 5.56mm.

I have shot FMJ, HP, and SP thru AK's, RPK, and RPD, never any issues. Thanks, Jerod

I've put about 2,000 rounds of Wolf Military Classic HPs through my Yugo M70 Century build and have not had any feed problems whatsoever!

It's the ones that are loaded shorter than FMJ's that cause the most problems. They can be hollow points or soft points that might too short to feed properly. The points of the bullets themselves can cause problems but it's usually due to short length.

I have had trouble with 7.62x39 HP in an AK pistol (Draco) and my friends Yugo krink pistol. I have never had a problem with it in carbines or RPKs. Thx-Ace

I just measured a bunch of FMJ, HP and one SP. Some of the HP was shorter and some LONGER than FMJ. As I recall the longer HP rounds feed fine in all my AKs. The shorter HP does not feed well in my WASR. My Chinese SKS eats everything whether using factory 10, 5 rd. and 20 rd. steel mag.
In any case, grinding slight extra feed ramps in the trunnion is probably all you'll need in order to use the shorter HP rounds. Look where the rounds hit the trunnion and all you need is a slight bevel or polishing in those areas.
