Yes the Ukraine uses old Soviet SKS's. In the first pic he is saying we can sell these to the Americans and make a fortune.

never saw any when I was there this last summer but picked up some cool soviet coins though

The Ukranians sent a lot of them here 10 years ago. The rifle can not be imported from Russia itself due to Clinton Ageement. So, most sit in Russia collecting dust because not so many people in Russia have access to or interest in them.

clinton what a bung hole! some american needs to buy the machinery like the man from PTR-91 did with the CETME

There is probably no machinery left from the manufacture of them, and it wouldn't have taken any really specialized machines, just some special cut end-mills. The Russians built them from 1945 - 1953(?) on already old machinery and basically chisseled them out of blocks of steel on milling machines. Think about how old a '57 Chevy is, the SKS was already done-for in the USSR from a production standpoint before the 57 Chevy came out.
Once they had the AK47 and then the AKM the SKS was pointless to their military strategy. I can't imagine that there are any production lines sitting in storage, they would have just scrapped them and retooled for AK production in the same building.
I work in manufacturing and have for 17 years, I know how much it costs to build things. It would cost so much to build an SKS in the US today that nobody would ever buy one. I'll would estimate that in serial, mass production a 2010 SKS would cost $750 - $1000 at retail.

I'll make you a deal on all of my SKS's. $699.99 each, And I'll even stamp 2010 on the receiver's! :small_gri

US made Simonovs?

Love the system. Rock solid, very reliable.

If you took the basic design of an SKS and chambered it in 5.56mm, had it take AR mags, then built one in .308 that took M14 mags, then you'd have something. Put a rail over the gas tube, throw a low-power scope on there Scout-style... it'd be a nice gun.

I don't see much of a market for 7.62x39mm US-made Simonovs
